My TB gelding has huge withers, so much so he had to have a saddle made with a dropped panel which cost me a fortune. I've been looking for a dressage sadddle for him but without having one made its not realistic at the moment. I've just been offered a dressage saddle which is the right width, just a bit too low on the withers as it has the ordinary type panel. Does anyone know if its possible for a saddler to remove the ordinary panels and replace with dropped panels?

I have a similar problem with my boy and i use a front riser prolite pad with my dressage saddle. It seems to work ok and he seems comfortable.

A a dropped panel is used in horse where there is muscle wastage around the withers , it is to fill the hollows. I personally very rarely use them when fitting saddles as I find them restrictive to ruture muscle development unless it has a serge underside

I fit and sell made to measure saddles and we would never charge more than a small amount for the drop panels.

I am confident you could have a Saddle company dressage saddle made to measure for £550 Verona (upper leather) £750 Genoa ( all leather) or £920 for a Sienna ( buffalo) and if you wanted/needed drop panels there would be littl or no extra charge

Whereabouts in the country are you?

I have owned 2 TB's with 'sharks fin' withers and had a real struggle to fit an off the peg saddle. Narrow ones pinched the wither and med ones sat too low.

In the end I did opt for a dropped panel Ideal Jessica which cost (at the time) £600 - I think they are a bit more now but not much more than £700. All leather with a suede seat - worth a look.

I'm in cornwall Bosworth, the reason he has dropped panels is because he has very high withers and hollows behind the withers after racing for over 10 years. His current saddle has serge filled panels, I was just wondering if it would be possible with the dressage saddle to remove the current panels and replace them with dropped panels.

What make of saddle have you got? It depends on the saddle make as some manufacturers will alter it and some won't. the two manufacturers I work with will

I am now in Devon and could possibly help - PM me

I probably could get that altered for you but wouldn't know until I have seen it. I charge £35 for a consultation. Alteration costs are between £100 and £200 but that of course is a complete reflock

no a drop saddle is not the same as an owen panel. A drop saddle looks just the same as an ordinary saddle except it has a wider area of flocking behind the points to fill the wasted area of muscle. Typically used on ex racehorses who have a lack of muscle from not working through their top line

hope that makes sense
