Hi there,
Wondering if anyone can advise me on saddles. My trusty Keiffer has finally bitten the dust and died, so sad, have had it for 20 plus years, so has had a good life!! But broke last week.
So on the search for a saddle.
Not sure whether to get a stubben or barnsby or Amerigo.

Does anyone recommend one in particular? Having a chap round next week to check the horse out and his saddles he has to see if they fit well.

But is it worth getting a new shiny one, obv. Very very expensive. Or a second hand one? Found cheap ones on ebay, but is this just too much of a gamble?

Would be a general purpose or jumping saddle I'd be looking at.

There is no point setting your heart at a particular brand without knowing what sort of shape suits your horse.
I would always go for second hand one, as it is a bit like a new car, as soon as you drive it out the dealership, it's lost 1/3 of its value.

Second hand all the way!

Definitely try them all first, before deciding in a brand. My sister hates stubbens, finds them like sitting on a plank of wood and will avoid at all costs. Other people absolutely love them!

I have a devoucoux saddle and absolutely love it!

I have a couple of friends who have had saddles from saddlesdirect.com. You can have the saddles on trial and if you take your horse to their shop they have a fitting service as well. I've not used them personally but I've heard good things and they have some nice saddles on the website.

I have to agree with the advice others have given, I wouldn't stick to just one brand. And yep deffo go second hand, there is way more choice out there. You should be able to pick something decent up :)

What might suit you seat wise may not suit your horse so its a matter of coming to a compromise as to what you feel comfortable in, and what your horse seems to like and goes nicely in.

Best advice given to me is try as many different makes as you can and you'll soon find one that suits you both.

Personally I'm not a fan of Stubben saddles because I find them very hard too.

Steer clear of the cheap eBay specials... they are cheap for a reason!

Try before you buy!

Brilliant,
Yes I have just found saddles direct, and they do look good, think ill give thema call.
Interesting about stubben, coimb to think of it, they do look quite plank like to sit on. :)
Thanks again for the advise

as others have said dont just stick to one brand, it depends what fits your horse. However if you had your last saddle for 20 years then maybe a really lovely new one is the way to go? Ive only ever had 2nd hand or if new, a cheaper make eg synthetic. However I was recently in the position to buy a brand new Black Country M2M for my mare, who is my horse of a lifetime. I adore my new saddle and doubt i will ever part with it ;) It's a Wexford and I find it incredibly comfy for day to day and very secure for jumping.
