Is it possible to get a decent box under £1500? Or am I better off hiring for the summer period April - Oct (Would be going halves with a friend so only £380 each)

Have found a few but are seriously battered or rear unload. I'd like something with front unload, all mechanically sound & as new a floor as possible really, seen the odd one with an ally floor but typically hundreds of miles away.

I've got myself a 2.7 Terrano to tow with which will pull 2800kg - my 14.3hh Section D & a friends 15.1hh Cob x is what will be in it.

Need a gem of a 505 to crop up or would it be more feasible to hire? Are there any downsides to long term hiring? Any tips on where to find a decent box?

Thankyou!!!

A friend & I purchased a older Rice Beaufort between us about 4 years ago. It had had a new timber floor and cost us £700 and then we had the electrics & brakes tested.
It is towed easily by a Terrano and we worked out the other day that we would have paid much more in insurance in the time we've owned it had we purchased a newer trailer than this trailer cost us.

We don't use it often but it good to have it ready if needed.

Yes i think you could, We paid £2000 for our 505 but it was mint. They had a few cheaper ones round the back (main Ifor dealer) that they had in as PX but didnt put on the forecourt.

Worth keeping an eye out then you think? I've got a few weeks at least between getting my trailer test done & the pony fit enough to compete or enjoy fun rides.

EBay a good place to look & preloved? That's where I'm finding most of the ones my price range.

Trailers are out there for a reasonable price, even better bargains in the winter.
We take our horses on pleasure rides, just walk or trot and being happy hackers, neither of them are what I call fit, but are capable of doing 2 hours work at walk, they enjoy it, ears pricked and walking out well, my lad would love to canter but I don't want him to over do it, go enjoy

Thankyou for the encouragement! :) I've got to be careful to see if my boy has the pollen allergy back again this year as he's breathless if he does :( want to let it get to the end of April when everythings in bloom so I know if he's good to go. I'm worried I'll buy one then can't ride lol. Got everything crossed!!!

Yeah typically I have the money to get one now, sure I could have saved a bit if I'd looked Christmas time but there we go.

I've found an older Rice locally so keeping that in mind :)

It is definitely possible :D I picked up a 505 with new ali floor and new wiring for £1500 just over a month ago. Its the older model but refurbed and completely sound and tows like a dream.

Annoyingly I got offered a nice lorry last week for not huge amounts more and am a bit gutted as would have preferred a lorry but can't really complain as I'm just happy to have transport. :D

I took a risk on an older Rice trailer in November. - £400.
Put it in for a service - £100 and it is sound and in good nick. Floor had been replaced recently on it and electrics etc all work. Its front/rear unload as well :)
It needs 2 new tyres.

It's perfect for me as it means I'll use it for a year, make sure I'll get enough use out of a trailer and then later on, I'll look into a new one - for when I travel both ponies.

If you want a bargain don't look at Ifors. They aren't any safer than less popular models and people (for reasons which I personally can not fathom) will pay a premium for them. You could find a decent rice for half that. A service for about £100 to check everything is ok and you're off.

I actually think £1500 is quite a lot of money to go trailer shopping with and I'm surprised you can't find anything for that

Don't understand why rear unload is an issue .
I never allow my horses to be unloaded from the front I train them to reverse out its safer when unloading at the side of a road and I never had a horse that would not reverse out happily after being taught .
I think you will find a trailer for that money if you hunt around and invest a little time.
You probally won't find an Ifor Williams for that as they are great resellers all mine have been very easy to sell on for this reason I always have one for going hunting.

Friend on yard bought one just before Christmas off eBay! It is a front and rear unload Richardson, resprayed, new floor, brakes, wiring and tyres, rubber matting and just serviced and it really is in excellent condition and she paid £795 for it! I had to borrow it a few weeks ago and we happily towed with it for 4 hours, it really was a bargain. They are out there so keep looking.

Fab! Thankyou all so much! Good few there worth a look definately. I'm in South Wales but willing to travel just not hundreds of miles plus I know if its something not tooooooo far from home my yard owner will come check it over with me & tow it home if I haven't passed my trailer test by then. Closer the better but will travel further if worth it really :-)

I had the impression 1500 was a lot as all the ones locally are quite a bit more & not the best.
