Another question, I am looking for a stallion for 13.1hh Welsh b mare, what would be the max I could safely put her too?

Generally speaking the mare will only allow the foal to grow to a size they can give birth to so you could chose any stallion. However most opinions are that you should not go any bidder than 2 or 3 hands but that's only opinions. Good luck

I had a 13.2hh x sect d mare so obviously heavier built than yours but put her to a 16.2hh TB, had the ok from my vet as I did think it was a bit big but he was known for producing slight foals. No problem at all. It was her first and only foal who is now 23. She only made 14.3hh.

Same here. I put my 13hh WPB mare to a 15.2hh TB, and she foaled perfectly safely. I still have her son who is 24 and only 13.1hh. I think build has more to do with it than height. It depends what you want, really. A nice TB or PBA would be my choice.

I'm glad I found this thread, as I have a 15 hand Welsh D stallion (so well built in more ways than one!) and was asked if it would be ok to bring a 12.2hh mare to him. I personally wouldn't be happy from the covering side of things, as in the past we did have a visiting mare, finely bred welsh B 13.3hh. I had to make a breeding roll to use for that covering as I was concerned about injury to the mare. That worked out fine, and she had a foal, but I'm not sure what size it ended up. Any other stallion owners have this quandary?

For a maiden wouldn't go much more than a hand higher, experienced broodies possibly up to 2 hands difference.
The mare in theory limits the size of the foal, but the actual research study of that was very flawed and small numbers.

To me it is not worth the risk having dealt with dystocias through the foal being overly large.

If there are bigger genes lurking they can come back and bite you in the butt. Friend of mine bred her 16.3hh IDSH to Upton's Deli Circus (around 15.3hh) for an event foal, resulting filly was so big they got her out with extreme difficulty - vet reckoned she clocked in at near 150kg. As a 4yo she is already close to 18hh and built like a MW - HW hunter type. UDC has cludesdale in his background and that obviously combined with the ID to produce a giant.

Also with live covering (opposed to AI), you have to think about the weight of the stallion, and also the physical compatibility. A large sturdy stallion, could very easily internally and externally damage a smaller mare.
