have been thinking about safety stirrups lately after hearing of a couple of nasty falls and wondered what type people use?

i currently have the flexi stirrups but im not convinced they are effective as a safety measure? has anyone heard of the barnes buckles? how effective are they?

I have the barnes buckles on my treeless saddle as it has closed rings for the stirrups to go through and not a bar. I don't know how effective they are as I have n't come off with that saddle (yet!), I think they are meant to be good though, I would definitely need thm if I did fall off and get a foot stuck

I have the ones with the kind of bend in the outside after being dragged twice.

I haven't falen off since but I am prettycertain my foot would come out easily.

Yes, I have the old fashioned peacock stirrups on everything.

FWIW one of the nastiest cases of a child being dragged I've seen was with the bent leg "Australian" stirrups, correctly fitted to child and saddle.

Peacock stirrups are not suitable for adults. They are not strong enough to take the weight in normal use and are likely to break, causing an accident. I was told this by the Jefferies sales manager when I had my saddlery. There is definitely a weight limit and I seem to remeber 8 stone being the figure.

I use ordinary stirrups and have never had an accident made worse by my sitrrups. The big problem is that people use the wrong width stirrup - far too narrow. A stirrup should have at least 1cm clearance either side of the boot. Anything less is far too small and will result in the foot being stuck in it. Children especially are at risk as people forget to check the stirrup against the boot as the child is growing up and tend to move stirrups from horse to horse.

Just ordered the bent ones. one minor question, I assume the bent side., goes on the outside, can anyone confirm.
Thank you

I have been left hanging by bent leg stirrups. I wouldn't trust them again. Peacocks do bend over time as an adult. But you only need to replace them and they willn last longer if you use a mounting block etc.

Your other options are Kwik-outs (favoured by my best mate), Caged stirrups (which I use for endurance), Smartrider (only really known in Australia but now on sale in UK) http://smartrideruk.com/ ,Safestyle (which I like the idea of) http://www.safestyle.nl/frames/content.asp?rubriek_id=99&module_id=3&taal_id=2

My mum uses the peacock ones and she must be about 12st. they are 6 years old and havent bent at all which I am quiet surprised at as I dont like them at all.

And I always lose my toe in the bent leg ones so dont like those either!

I got dragged in my bent leg stirrups. It was during my first lesson on a my mare who I'd owned 7 weeks... My instructor was horrified, they aren't too small and it shouldn't have happenend, just a freak accident. In short, I still used them, even though I have fallen off since

it hasn't happened again...

I've got barnes buckles on my stirrups too. Bought them after hearing about the weight limit for peacock stirrups. I haven't fallen off yet but when my daughter rode my horse and fell off and they worked a treat. My one worry when I first bought them was that they would come undone in normal use but that hasn't happened - not even when my boy's feeling lively and puts in a few bucks. Not many people notice them either. Have used them for about 2 years and no sign of wear/rust on them.
