I had a bit of a tumble off my share horse the other day and, while I don't remember a great deal, I do remember having to reattach my stirrup leather to the saddle afterwards, so I'm guessing my foot got caught in the stirrup to some extent.

Having thought a bit about what might have happened if the leather hadn't come off the saddle, I've decided to investigate safety stirrups!

I remember the Peacock ones from my childhood but I'm now a smidge above the weight limit for those. What else is on the market that people recommend? Straightforward bentleg ones, or anything more complicated?

I've recently got some Compositi stirrups (I think the brand is Shires) and their toe cages for the jockey of my pony as they stop her foot going too far in to the stirrup (she is a horror for not keeping the stirrups on the ball of her feet) the cages should eliminate the chances of a foot going all the way through the stirrup. They do them in adult size

I'd say the very safest thing would be toe cages attached to normal stirrups. I've got bent leg safety stirrups and I'm happy with those. Check the sole of your boots, the smoothest soles are safest for riding. Remember also that with some saddles the stirrup bars aren't that close to the saddle and the stirrup leathers come off much more easily in the event of a fall.

I have toe cages and composites on the pony, as the kids are more prone to sliding their feet through the stirrup. Sprenger bow balance on my own, should hopefully have some give if my foot gets stuck.
