I'm looking for a new pair of safety stirrups. I'm due to back my youngster next year & don't think he'll be easy!!

I don't have a big budget. I currently ride in shires compositi reflex stirrups which I love.

Thanks 😊

This thread may help https://forums.horseandhound.co.uk/threads/le-mieux-vector-stirrups.831211/.

There are good points and bad points to all - peacocks and bent leg, cheap as ships, the former not rated for above about 8 stone, the second cause stability issues in the foot and lower leg for many riders. Every rider is different and most of these new designs have their pluses, but none will work well for all riders.

Do you have any foot or lower leg issues? Do your feet sit evenly across the stirrup or do you have a gap on the big toe side? Lots of things to consider...

My feet tend to sit at angle in the stirrups

Can you borrow any stirrups from anyone to try? I would consider ones that are 45 or 90 degrees where the leather inserts, so the stirrup isn't trying to pull across your toe. It's not as simple as that, the saddle affects how your whole leg hangs more than you'd realise, but they may help. Keep an eye on @equimech on FB to see the work she'll be doing on stirrups, it's not an area that's well understood.

Just to muddy the waters (!) I find the endurance stirrups with caged-in toe are very comfortable.
If you're on a small budget you can fit them to your existing stirrups. I glued mine in, in case they decided to part company at a critical moment!
Like this (just the first photo I found, mine are a different make) https://gsequestrian.co.uk/products...O8e4yqBZW5wDBiw5ycV3FVXR5tWmr6hhoCdY0QAvD_BwE
I'm afraid I agree that you need to make a nuisance of yourself & ask everyone you know if you can borrow theirs.

I wouldn't spend the money on tech stirrups, yes they open very easily but they are so expensive, really heavy! and I think they look massive on a saddle! We had them, used them for a few days and then sold on. We've got the Le mieux vector balance ones instead, much prefer them

I've got bent leg stirrups and also 'Swiss clips' that quick release the whole stirrup from the leather in the event of an emergency. Did the double for the same reason as you - backing a youngster - and have just stuck with it. The only issue I've had with the clips is that they don't fit quite a lot of irons - I'd have preferred to use something like the Composti stirrups but the bit where the leather goes through is too big for the clips.

I ride with double bent leg irons, cheap compared to the big brands and very light. I sealed to these from what you've got now. I think forward facing stirrups are safer on an unpredictable youngster. These come in black as well. Mine have a neater top.
