As title really... at least I hope it's spring fever :( My saint of a horse has been on his toes for the last week - grumpy in the stable, wouldn't be caught on one day, spooky on hacks (VERY out of character) and then yesterday I was on him for all of 10 seconds before he took off and put in one HUMUNGOUS buck. I've never even seen him buck when he's been in the field or loose schooled, never mind ridden. Next thing I knew I was on the floor of the sand arena. I used to be able to sit the most vicious of bucks, but I just wasn't ready for this one. Yard manager was watching and she said I didn't do anything like jab him in the mouth accidently etc, she reckons it's just silly season.

I got straight back on and just did a little bit of walking/trotting over poles to settle him, but he still wouldn't concentrate - very unlike him. Confidence-wise I wasn't actually worried when I hopped back up but when I left the yard and was driving home I got really upset... mainly because unfortunately yesterday was my last day with him for a week (trip up home to family/boyf and then Badminton) and I'm worried that all the confidence/trust we've spent the last 6 weeks building will have gone when I get back.

I really really hope that my confidence hasn't been as badly bruised as my arse, and that he's back to normal when I get back!

Consolatory vodka/lime anyone?

p.s. checked for sores/lumps, teeth only just been done etc etc!

A couple of ours who are normally sensible most of the time have been acting like loonies the last couple of weeks. Personally I blame the spring grass. Might be worth trying him with some magnesium supplement to see if that helps in case the flush of grass has caused a slight imbalance? Worst that can happen is nothing but with some horses it can have quite a dramatic effect if it is this.

If he doesnt do it at all loose or in the field I would possibly suggest getting a second opinion on saddle as that pain often causes them to be silly (I know you said its only just been done :p!). But hopefully its just the sugar getting to his head! :)

Thanks for the sympathy/encouragement/advice all, really appreciate it :)

Yard manager texted me just now to say they were all proper headcases today - charging around like sectionable lunatics bucking and rearing etc. And apart from one mentalist ex-racehorse, they're normally the laziest bunch of grass-hoovers you'd ever see.

So this has made me feel better!

Snowysadude - if he does it again I will check his saddle for sure. Don't think it is though - it's been checked recently, he hasn't changed shape and I checked saddle and his back for lumps/bumps etc - nothing's different from when I had my nice considerate sane horse two weeks ago! It was only one buck and he didn't do it again, so fingers crossed it was just something he needed to get out of his system. Also that YM said they were all nutters today
