Is it normal that I as the owner pay the advertising costs as well as the livery costs and shoeing costs? I thought it was normal for the people doing the sale of the horse to pay these fees.

Thanks

Yes so far as I know it's normal.

Livery costs are for looking after and riding your horse (and hopefully improving him!) Presenting the horse for sale and showing it off to the vendor, and all associated negotiation is also part of the sales livery.

Shoeing costs are always extra to the livery, whether sales or any other type.

Advertising costs are also separate - where the adverts are placed and therefore the costs thereof should be discussed with the vendor. and depend on the quality and sale price of the horse.

The yard should discuss all this with the vendor prior to taking the horse and incurring costs.

I did yes.

The livery fee paid for stable, care, exercise, bedding and feed. Wormers, shoeing, vet fees etc etc and advertising were all on top of that.

Down here at a professional yard its 10% of final selling fee plus livery and then any extra costs like shoes, dentist, vet is covered by the owner too..

However as a non professional yard (taking in the odd horse here and there for friends or friend of friends etc etc) i charge £80 PW inc livery, riding and producing and also showing the horse off to clients, plus taking the horse to shows if required... all i ask is that the fuel is covered (if i take my own horse, i cut the fuel price in half). Obviously all worming, vet, farrier and dentist fee's would be covered by owner too..

:-)
