Has anyone here had experience of salmonella in horses. Friends horse has just had blood tests after coming down with colic and it has salmonella. It is now at vet hospital on a drip and in isolation.
Any info in reasonably simple terms would be appreciated.
Have googled and am being blinded with science!!

One of the horses from the riding school where Sunny used to be in livery had an attack of salmonella. TBH it was touch and go at one point but tons of tlc and rest over about a month and he made a total recovery. Was grim at the time - too weak to stand etc etc. Hope your friend's ned is ok x

Sorry to hear about your friends horse.
I dont know all the details but a horse on an adjoining yard had Salmonella and sadly it was PTS. It wasnt diagnosed straight away and we think the horse was sold to her with it as it fell very ill within a week of her having it. I remember all the other horses being put in the field to keep them away from it as its a small yard and they were told to burn everything that had been in contact with the horse.
Fingers crossed your friends horse is ok.

I'm not 100% sure as I was only young, but I'm sure the vt mentioned the cow muck heap as a possible source of salmonella in he foal?

I'm not at all certain as like I said it was ears and years ago, will find out what really happened from mum. Tried phoning her a bit ago but she's not home yet

Again Im not 100% certain but Im sure someone said it could be passed on thrugh droppings the infected horse had done. Dont quote me on this though. Feed, water hay etc can be contaminated by something that has the virus, a hen, rat, mouse.

I think all horses carry some type of the virus but its triggered by different factors, like stress.
