UPDATE:
yesterday i put a post up about but a tsp of salt in your water buckets to stop them freezing.
the verdict it attually work. :O:O this morning i went to let the beasts out and they were not froozen. But all the others were lol YAY!!!

I too had heard that salt water had a lower freezing point...indeed this may be why they salt and grit roads to melt ice.
Horses, like humans, tend not to thrive drinking salt water, however.

YUK!!!

Would you drink salt water??

no, i didnt think so....

put a tennis ball into the bucket..it will keep the surface from becoming solid, therefore allowing your horse to drink..

i really doubt that i tsp of salt will really affect a 15 ltr bucket of water, you would barely taste it.

If there is enough salt in the bucket to lower the freezing point, there will be enough salt that he will be able to taste it.
If he is deficient in sodium chloride, then this may be ok short term, but long term it can cause health problems.
Could you maybe try insulating the bucket by standing it on straw/shavings, and banking the bedding up around it? And you could try putting a tennis ball or an apple in it to stop the surface freezing.
It's supposed to be getting milder and wetter so maybe you won't need to do anything.

i have proof against this!
harmony wouldnt touch her water in a bucket, i also did the salt test, and not one drop was left,
so evidently, this does not bother them.

alsoabout the tennis ball theory, what if your horse has a habbit of chewing/trying to eat things?

use a bigger ball..............

also if, as you say, your horse drank "all of it", then her diet is lacking in essential electrolites.....

horses do not naturally drink salted water.

FACT!

Proof against what?
Do you mean that you gave your horse salt water...and she drank it all? In which case she may be electrolyte deficient - and you should really give her full electrolytes (which include potassium) as well as fresh water.
If any horse was stupid enough to swallow a tennis ball, I'd see it as evolutionary survival of the fittest

Edited to add: Do you really live in Licolnshire?

oh yes

I see you re-captured your escaped 'n'

The trouble with feeding salt in water is that your horse could be overdosed with electrolytes, and have no access to fresh water to rebalance its fluids. It's a really good idea to offer a salt lick as you do, but it's only really safe if your horse has access to fresh, unsalted water too.
Salt toxicity in horses is rare, but not impossible - and the signs are usually mild colic (there's supposed to be an increased risk of causing gastric ulcers) and diarrhoea.
But as the night time temperatures are due to rise, I'm sure this is all academic.

Our horses are out from 7am - 5pm there abouts, they have fresh water in theyre troughs there, as when they come in, the troughs in the stable have frozen up, i wont put a ball in as a friends horse choked on one ( greedy horse ) but IMO ide rather not put harm to the test with it.

You're fine then, as the horses will rebalance their electrolytes with the fresh water.
Try a larger ball...or a bit of log..anything that bobs about will slow ice forming (silly horse)

Yes.
I am always serious too.
I am still enjoying the mental image of you swimming through the poo-bergs after Guinness, though.
