Hi all

Well we are getting to that time again of slipery ice covered yards and I was wondering if anyone could recommend a good place to buy salt/ grit from please and what kind of price people pay?

Also any advice on gritting a yard would be much appreciated. Do you keep an eye on the weather forcast and if ice is due you grit/ salt the yard the night before?

Thanks in advance and happy to keep discussion best methods and easy ways of how to ... Thanks in advance :)

Depending on where you are in Bucks you could try Bagforce in Brackley

They have small bags around the £3.50 mark I think and they also do bulk bags of it

They will alos give you advice on the best time and method for application

Most builders yards sell grit, or garden centres.

If the temp drops below 2 degrees, we grit the yard. Scoop the grit up in a mug, and then scatter it over the yard with a bowling motion, but keep hold of the mug!

A livery yard close by uses straw they have mucked out to make path ways along the yard, to the school and fields. It looks messy, but is really effective for a non slip walkway, just needs a clean and tidy every now and then. The snow doesn't tend to settle on it either.

We use dirty bedding as above, but our local agricultural merchants sell salt. I have heard it isn't good for (tarmac or concrete can't remember which) though, and if we do get a hard frost, they always run out so if you need some now is the time.

Yes I'm thinking rather than a mad dash we could get prepared in advance. Not looking forward to it but last year I was on a DIY Livery yard who didnt grit and it got to the point where the horses couldnt come out of there stables which was a nightmare and in my opinion totally unsatisfactory and badly managed by the YO!
