I have a very sweaty horse. We went out for 2 hours this morning and by the time we got back so was soaked through everywhere and foaming a little!! She's had a good bath, but I'm concerned that sweating like this is not that great for her, and she's losing minerals, salt etc. She lives out 24/7 and doesn't really come in (only for vet, farrier etc - stable around 1 mile from field), doesn't get any hard feed (good doer, happy hacker!) so giving her supplements is awkward (though not impossible obviously). I've been reading about electrolytes but they seem maybe a little excessive, and I'd have to bring her in to isolate her water, so was wondering if just getting a big salt lick for the field would be enough? Or would you give electrolytes too?

I have a Redmond Rock mineral lick in my field so that the horses and ponies can have free access to it. It seems to last a lot longer than normal salt licks which always crumble in the rain or break up: http://www.redmondrock.co.uk/WhyRedmondRock.asp

Mine live out 24/7, though they do have a little hard feed at the minute, but Belle works up a sweat during our lessons.

I use Himalayan salt blocks. Doesn't melt in the rain and lasts for ages. I have one in the field and one in the stable. I prefer to let my boy 'help himself' than give salt in a feed.

I use these too they're great! Also for my shets i have a dengie garlic lite lick which comes in a tub , for those that don't get hard feed , it's got all the vits / mins plus garlic ( helps with flies / worms ) but is really low in sugar..

My pony sweats a lot and is very hairy etc but I just buy the cheap blocks that go in the salt lick holders and throw it on the ground in the field. Sometimes he steps on it but it usually lasts a few weeks. I did by the big mineral molasses type tubs but he is a good doer and he would eat it in about 3 days!! Just make it available they cost £2 approx

Mine dont seem to touch their salt licks. I add my own electrolytes to their feed on hot days / when they've worked hard. I just mix half low salt and half normal table salt then give a teaspoon full in a feed that day. Mine refuse to drink electrolyte water so this is the only way that works for us.
