Salt lick problem

How do you make salt licks last? The salt lick has a hole in the middle and the rope to hang it up by goes through this hole. As the pony licks at it, the hole becomes a gap and the salt lick falls to the floor. Pony then ignores the lick!

I thread the rope through it, tie it on a small piece of stick/ broom handle etc. Then tie other end to a convenient tie ring I've popped up.
Means it lasts a lot longer, then eventually when it breaks I lob it into an old feed bucket in the corner of a shelter.

Thanks for suggestions. Pony ignores it once it is in a bucket.

I have a short length of hosepipe through the middle, so the rope doesn't cut its way through when it gets damp, and rotate it when it's looking a bit worn.
