Hi all, so have been thinking of giving pony something extra for after a BE wereby he sweats a lot, I bought him a salt lick but he doesn't touch it, he does however lick metal if he's tied up next to the freezer container... what's he missing/ is there anything I can give him supplement wise to help?

I would be giving any horse that is working hard some electrolytes each day in it's feed, they do not usually get enough from a lick to replace the salt lost and in this hot weather I feed some to mine as routine even if they are not working that hard they will be sweating a little.

Without knowing the composition of the metal lick holder but assuming it is some sort of aluminium alloy, I would go for copper or magnesium. Just to add, your horse may not be necessarily deficient but enjoys the taste!

Frank licks the metal and the sides on the trailer/lorry, sometimes a bit of a soil though not so much of that since we moved- even though was receiving minerals balanced to forage analysis at the time.... I think he just likes to make sure it is clean...

Yes I know, it had gone through my head that he's just a bit weird bless him! But still worry about him loosing though seat.
I looked at kosolian blood salts ??

A salt lick (I use a hymalayan salt lick) should be available ad lib. After hard work, it is wise to add electrolytes to the horses water to replace missing salts/minerals to prevent tying up.

Be very careful if adding to the water as some will not drink it, always offer plain water as well or put them in the feed to make sure they are taken.
