One of the horses at our small yard started being poorly on sat , vet out on sunday took bloods , he on painkillers and being walked every 2 hours , blood results back and he is anemic [ can't spell it ] , Now at Newmarket awaiting x-ray in morning , vet thinks it could be sand colic , horrible to see him like that has put a big black cloud over the yard as we are all close , has anyone had any experience with sand colic and how on earth did it happen as we don't have sandy paddocks , bit of mud in gate ways but mainly grass , vibes for Corrib please :(

one of the ways (not saying do instead of the vet - do as well) is get some of the horses droppings, swish it with water and then pour out slowly - if the horse has sand there will be some in the bottom of the bucket. My mare was prone to this so I had her on sand out to help her. Should also say in case my post doesn't read properly - this was done under vet supervision. As for how it happens - my mare was the only one who managed to get it but she is quite greedy so putting her onto poor grazing to help keep her weight down meant she ended up with sand colic.
