Sand cracks / vetting

Will a 5 stage vetting tell me if sand crack(s) are from faulty conformation, hereditary, poor diet, poor farriery etc. And how long would you expect a hoof to grow out if the crack is towards the coronet. Would you buy a horse for £4.5K with cracks. Brain is on overload at the mo. Would really recommend some advice. Thanks.
 
Yep, mine has sand cracks and brilliant feet. The person who I bought them from said they would grow out - but 4 years later they haven't.

However the sand cracks are only about half a millimeter deep, I think my thoughts are -

1. How deep are they
2. Are they generally good feet or not

It may be that you could send a photo to your farrier for a more conclusive response?
 
Many thanks for your comments. Unfortunately I don't have any photos. I have spoken to my vet and farrier and they both have advised me to wait to see what the vet says, but can the vet really tell without x-rays.
 
I bought a horse with the most hideous sandcrack I've ever seen. It ran from the coronary band to the bottom of the hoof and both sides were moving independently, the hoof capsule had burst. The horse had been turned out for months with shoes on and not seen the farrier.

My farrier takes an interest in remedial work and shod her with double clip shoes, these were replaced every 6 weeks. The hoof held together at the coronary band and from day 1 we never looked back, it grew out in a year and now you would never know it had ever been there.

So, if a crack like that can be resolved, I would not have a problem buying a horse with sandcracks.
 
Depends hoe deep it goes through the hoof and what work u want to do and how quickly. Generally these things can b resolved with good diet, balanced trimming and appropriate work load. Might try and get sum knocked off price tho as its extra work (and potential cost) for u!! X
