After this winter and the MUD!!!!! i am thinking of turning my small holding paddock in to a sand paddock to keep them on and feed on next winter during the worst weather rather than ruining my paddocks. The paddock is 20m x 30 m and slopes gently and is a bit undulating as underneath is a lot of hardcore that we covered in top soil and reseeded a few years ago so it drains very well. My question is could i just put a membrane down and cover with sand? I know it is small for a proper menage but if i'm spending money should i do it properly. We probably wouldn't ride much on it more lungeing. How much would it cost for an area that size?

Lungeing causes more damage to a surface than riding thats why a lot of yards don't allow lungeing in their sand schools.
I would say that if you are in tending to use it for turn out you need to do the best job you can and any extra drainage will be worth it as it will take a beating in bad weather.then a mebrane before putting on a surface ,Wood bark does need to be regularly topped up .
