The sand school at our yard is so deep that my horse fell over in canter and sent me nose diving the other day. He is a big 16.1 welshie and due to his age is still a bit unbalanced in canter, I felt really sorry for him, it was a very scary accident for both of us.

Can anyone recomend any solutions to sort the school out, its at a livery yard, but trying to get anything done is difficult. I think it will need some serious raking, but I'll have to wait until i'm fully recovered before I can do anything like that.

Oh dear how horrible! I think you're right and some serious raking is in order, plus some watering, if it's not raining loads. We have the opposite problem; not enough sand (keeps blowing/washing away down the hill!!) and we've improv ed it by chucking all the shavings from the beds on it and raking it like mad.

Ouch! I can sympathise as the same thing happened to me and my old mare when the livery yard we were at had new school surface put down. It was so deep that she sank down to her knees in it virtually and she fell in canter and sent me flying. I was really lucky actually because she was rolling towards me but I sort of rolled faster and she didn't roll onto me. She was winded but otherwise ok and I suffered a groin injury which lasted for months. Hope you and your boy are both soon ok again.

we have same problem with beach sand school on small yard we rent its unusable when dry and drifts a lot been good all winter when wet and i leval it regular but we are now looking at putting some rubber fibre on top to stablise it beachsand is a big no in schools but they wouldnt be told when making it

Ouch, hope you and your boy are okay now. Just wondering (sorry, don't mean to hijack thread), is there an ideal depth for sand arenas? Just I've often wondered whether the one I ride on is too deep or not
