As per title...

We have 2 1/2 acres of sandy (inland) grazing with a horse and a pony on it. It drains very well, but the grass is sparse due to the nature of the soil. The only wet patch / poached bit we have is right by the gate.

I really want some ideas on how I can improve the soil, but googling has only come up with ideas more suited to gardens / borders. Or desert experiments & we're not quite that bad!! Spent mushroom compost comes up over & over again, but I'm not sure if it would be any good for grazing?

The field is split into 2 so I can keep the horses off one half if I've been spraying nettles etc.

Any ideas / suggestions / better search words to google much appreciated!
