Has anyone used either of these products for adding topline? Have they made your horses more full of themselves?

Equi-jewel has more fibre content in it but also contains molasses... Outshine has little fibre but v high oil content and a much higher digestible energy and supposedly no molasses BUT it has sugar beet pulp (is that the same as molasses but just a different way of calling it?)

Thoughts on either? Its for a horse that gets excited easily on high starch feeds

interesting neither give the exact starch content, they just say minimal

I used to use outshine when I was showing at County level and it does make a difference - can't say it fizzed her up but she was a very laid back yearling and nothing much phased her. Never used equi-jewel so can't comment on that one.

Baileys will send you some outshine samples to try but probably wouldn't be enough quantity wise to see if it will fizz her up. They used to do a smaller tub of it rather than the sack but not sure if they still do.

mollasses is not the same as sugar beet pulp. Mollasses is what is extracted as a by product of sugar production and sugar beet pulp is the actual plant used to extract the sugar from.
To build topline you need adequate protein and appropriate training. There is no such thing as a bag of feed that will build topline on its own. You need to compare protein levels and quantities fed to see if they will give you what you require. i.e. feeding one cup of a feed does not contribute much protein if the protein level of that feed is 15%. Feeding a sack full would but then you will be feeding too much of other things.

Thank you teddyt i know i need appropriate training to get topline

i dont like feeding my horses mollasses (it caused tying up in my old horse!), it concerns me that feeds that are billed as low in starch still contain mollases, although im told that it is just to bind the pellets together?!

my horse gets fed good quality protein with alfalfa and a balancer, just looking for something a bit extra thats going to give her help. Shes worked fairly hard! im trying the equi-jewel at the mo, just not sure if the outshine would be better as it doesnt contain the mollases!

Thanks Star, thats good to know

Ring the companies and ask what the starch level is exactly and how much mollasses the equijewel has. You can then make a more informed decision. If the horse is ok on the equijewel i would stick with that. Youre right, Mollasses is used to stick pellets together.
