My neighbour has had it confirmed her horse has sarcoids (the ones which start off as bald patches but can develop later into crusty lumps - sorry, she couldn't remember the technical name the vet gave her).
Prognosis isn't great:
Chemo injections on the area around his eye
Chemo cream for the other areas (neck, stifle, girth area)
Treatment will cause his skin to swell and become raw / inflamed before scabs form and finally drop off. He may have a bad reaction to the protein in the injection. Vet said can give pain killers to counter side effects.
Treatment may work and sarcoids will stay away for upto 7 years but it could come back in a matter of months.
Horse not insured but she has been setting aside contingency funds to cover for such things. Treatment likely to cost £1,000.
Basically what she wants to know is has anyone else had a similar problem and what course of action / treatment did they do?
Horse is fit and healthy apart from these bald patches at the moment and she is in a real dilema as to what to do.
Thanks
