I have a 4 year old on loan, With a view to buy.
He is unbroken, the lady who owns him got pregnant as he was coming into a suitable age for backing, So never got around to it.

He's a lovely lad, He lunges nicely, Beautiful paces, Good manners, very sensible - I've walked him past other horses galloping around fields and he just plods along happily.

He has had sarcoids in his ears though. Now, Sarcoids alone don't put me off. They were lasered off. Whats getting to me is this;

He's fine with me touching his ears gently, and touching around his head, He has a headcollar on with no trouble, never flinches putting it on/taking it off.

I put a bridle on him today, And he wouldn't have it on. He accepts the bit but will not have it over his ears. In the end he let me put it on piece by piece. He stood happily once it was on. I took him in the school and lunged him, He faffed around with his mouth a bit but then he's not used to having anything in it.

Came to taking the bridle off - Same again, Would not let me get it over his ears, I had to take it off piece by piece. Put headcollar on fine.

Owner says theres nothing wrong with him but he needs trust building because of the treatment he is headshy with it (Although he lets me touch him all over? I've had quite a few headshy horses to deal with, Never had one who is only head shy with a bridle?).

To me and my friend it seemed like it as hurting him though to put the bridle over his ears. It wasn't arsey, dangerous behaviour.

Friend says i should insist the owner has a vet up in front of me so i know, Or that i say to her 'If you're insistant that it is just trust he needs, Leave him on loan, i will buy him when i see some improvement' as this sort of thing will imrpove with just handling if it's head shyness. But either way don't part with any money until something is agreed.

What do you think? Has anyone had any experience with this or similar?

Have you checked his teeth, might be as you are pulling it up towards his ears you are hurting his mouth so hes shying away?

It's definitely his ears. I put the bit in without the actual bridle, Just the bottom bits of the straps that go onto the bridle, And lifted it up as high as it would be if i were going to put the actual bridle on, he was fine. He is fine with the whole bridle - Until you go for the ears.

And i had to mess around with the straps the adjust length etc once it was on (New bridle) and he was fine with that too, And he did it without the bit too.
