Hey people :)

So I'm just after a bit of advice, or maybe just your opinion... I'm so unsure what to do...

My pony is currently undergoing Liverpool treatment for her sarcoids. One is very large and positioned on her upper inner thigh. The other is still large but on her teat area.

When she swishes her tail, it whips right under her belly of course. Since starting Liverpool cream, I have had to bandage up her tail. I cut the length to about her hock, did 1 big plat then folded it up and it is held in place with vetwrap and electric tape. Her tail is extremely thick and heavy, so even cut to hock length, when its folded up it makes a very heavy block of a tail. In pain, she's of course tryin to swish it but its just banging around in her bum cheeks!! I am having to re bandage it every 3 days because the weight of it and the force at which she bangs it is making it fall out no matter what I do. She finishes this batch of cream treatment in 4 days time. The sarcoids are expecte to take weeks to slough though, once it scabs and starts becoming looser it must not be forced or pulled off, the longer it takes to slough the better... So therefore if inlet her tail down, it will catch and rip off the scabs...

So, I guess my dilemma is do I continue this repetitive process of bandaging it up for however many more weeks, or, do I cut her tail off to a length where it won't reach under far enough..?? It would be much more comfortable for her wouldn't it. She wears a Boet fly rug 24/7 so her tail isn't needed for fly swatting really... She's look a bit silly with such a short tail I know, but it does grow super quick anyway, it's an amazing tail!!!

I'm totally torn... Vanity shouldn't come into it at all when it comes to something medical, but cutting it off seems such a big thing... But then bandaging seems uncomfortable and unfair.. And when I ride her looks stupid and makes people stare...

Has anyone else had anything similar? A wound in an awkward place like this? Anyone else had to cut the tail off..??

Any input, advice or opinions appreciated!!

Thanks a lot, a very indecisive pony owner!! x

:-)

I'd grin and bear it and trim the tail right back. It's most important to get the sarcoid sorted and the tail will grow back in time.

Personally agree with Gloi. You should just cut it. As heartbreaking and strange as it might look! Health comes before anything and it will grow back eventually :-)

i would not be leaving a tail bandage on for three days at a time, i find it quite shocking that anyone would tbh.

cut the tail it will grow back, you run the risk of losing the tail completely by leaving a bandage on for that long

After knowing someone who accidentally left a tail bandage on over night and the pony lost its tail totally and now only grows back in patches due to the hair folicles being damaged i would siggest cutting it as short as possible.
