Depends where they are. One of my mares I think has a small sarciod between her front legs which won't cause a problem unless it grows huge! One of my old horses had sarciods around her right eye.......She had to be PTS because they got bad.
Sarcoids are the most common skin tumours of the horse. Some believe that sarcoids may be better considered as tumours as they seem to be not contagious.
Echo Kat - does depend on where they are - I had a horse who had a sarcoid on her inner thigh - we left well alone until it started getting larger - had the liverpool cream and it never recurred.
Sarcoids are very unpredictable an can cause problems, especially if they spread to places such as the girth area. My sisters horse was out of work for 9months because of a sarcoid where the girth went. Treatment can be very expensive and insurance companies will exclude them from the policy if sarcoids are identified at a vetting.
my horse has sarcoids she had three on the inside of one of her hindlegs one grew very large this was ringed and fell off (then had the cream applied) and another had that special cream injected into it that you get from dr derek knottenbelt from liverpool university. she still has one its about a cm aquare and shes had it for 5 yrs now and its not changed shape. to get that cream is tricky tho as you have to take pictures of your horses sarcoids and send them off to liverpool uni where they make up the cream accordingly.
Two of my horses have sarcoids, never caused them any probs because of where they are (one between front legs and other on inside of hind leg). We were thinking about using the liverpool cream on the first horse as his did not look very nice and although it doesnt affect him if he had to wear a martingale it would. The cream is v expensive and can only be applyed by a vet (we havnt done it yet because it is so expensive and at the mo he isnt really doing much anyway) apparently the winter is the time to do it because it makes the sarcoid almost turn inside out and the flies would really bother it. Not sure what happens if it gets on rugs though, so maybe it has to be autumn/spring time.
Also, a friend found some kind of herbal thing which worked very well on her pony, however the vet said that it oly works on some types of sarcoid, can try and find out more about that if you want. And, have you read the threads on camrosa, havnt used it myself, but it sounds very good, cheaper aswell. Another friend (wow it sounds like i have alot of friends) had her mares ringed, they have got so bad now that the vet refuses to do them so she does them herself. poor mare is going to have to be put down because they are so awful. ringing just makes them drop of(like a lambs tail) but i dont think it stosp them re-accuring because it doesnt get the root. Or thre is sugery, but again expensive, and have heard bad things about it.
Anyway, we have spoken of alot of people about them and it really depends where thy are. Judges have said that as they dont effect my horses movement in any way they wont affect placings(local level though dont know about higher). If it doesnt bother you or the horse, you are probably better to leave them alone.
