Sarcoid Treament - Anyone heard of a new vaccine?

I have a lovely 15 year old belgium warmblood who has had a number of flat and some small nodule sarcoids in his groin area for a few years now. I have had them monitered by different vets over the years and general opinion has to leave them alone. Over the last few weeks some have grown and one has changed dramatically from a size of a thumb nail to a size of a tennis ball! My vet is contacting Liverpool and is going to be costly course of cream treatment etc etc (we think, I will know more next week). My vet has heard of a new vaccine that University of Glasgow are introducing which apparantly is preventative and can help the treatment of sarcoids. Has anyone heard of this or used it?? If so are there side effects? Has anyone not had good results with the Liverpool cream. My horse is not in any pain or discomfort and is only used for hacking. Anyones advice would be great - thanx

There is a thread on page 3 from Courtjester10 regarding Sarcoids and Showing - there is some interesting info in there. My horse had Liverpool treatment about 4 weeks ago now - for the first time, they have scabbed over and look to be dropping off - am hoping they will be gone (forever!?) so that I can carry on showing. I have not heard of the injection (hope I don't need to use it) but would be very interested to see if anyone else has (for future reference!). Good luck with your fella.
 
Interesting.... Im just worried about treating a sarcoid that is so big and especially with cream. Its grown so quickly which is worrying but then whats the alternative? Thanks for advice so far though :)
 
the one that has grown what type is it? could it be banded? have a good chat with your vet. get him to send pics to derek knottenbelt then go from there! i have one pony that went to liverpool for BCG treatment! success 10 years on! another that had serious invasive laser treatment under GA followed up by cream 5 years ago. success! but not cheap! Do NOT self medicate! talk to your vet and get him to refer!
 
I've had some that were like a large marble under the skin banded & injected with Liverpool Cream. They healed really quickly - about 6 weeks. I think it depends exactly where they are as the skin on the inner thigh can be quite thin & there is a risk of the banding tearing the skin. The groin is a tricky area as you don't want the cream to rub off onto healthy skin.

My horse has just finished the Liverpool treatment. She had it done about 7 years ago also and unfortunately they grew back. My mare's sarcoids are mostly nodular sarcoids. Most of them were fairly small but one grew almost overnight. Decided I needed to do something about them so discussed everything with my vets and Derek Knottenbelt directly. Both my vets and Derek Knottenbelt have been great. She had to have the large sarcoid (the size of a golf ball) debulked and then had the end banded. Some of the others were also banded and the Liverpool Cream was applied. It looked very messy and sore whilst she was having the treatment but is now all scabbed over. They also treated one on her chest between her legs which was well routed in the muscles and had come out through the skin that much.

I was delighted when I heard of the possible new treatment as I believe it is non-toxic. The article is very interesting and they have had some good results from the lab. I got in touch with the University about putting my mare up for a trial (if her sarcoids grew back). At present they don't have the funding for these trials. The Horse Trust did initially fund the lab trials but do to the economic climate have had to withdraw it.

I got in contact with the Horse Trust to see if there was any possible way of funding the trials on horse and they said that they were looking for ways to fund it but it probably wouldn't happen this year.

I think if more people get in touch with them to push this treatment it may help.
