MY vet applied Liverpool Cream to my youngster's sarcoids (udder/inside thighs) this morning and will be reapplying every other day until early next week. My horse was fine about it all today but just wondered if other owners could let me know how their horses reacted to the application of the cream after the initial application. I did have her head in a feed bucket and she has never kicked before but I'm worried that she may become difficult to handle when the vet calls again if she's sore. Has anyone's vet had to resort to sedating their horse during the treatment? My vet has also given me bute to give her did other owners find their horses coped without it or was it needed for the pain?

Hiya, my nervy and suspicious WB got quite twitchy by the 3rd or 4th application, but didn't get to the point of needing sedation. But he def needed the bute. The inside of his thighs were the worst, they swelled and were extremely sore but it only lasted for a few days at most and then settled right down again. The main problem in that area was the cream rubbing off on to the healthy skin - there is only so much vaseline will do to stop that from happening. If the vet applies the cream properly and doesn't smear it on then she'll probably cope absolutely fine.

Thanks for the reply Bubbles. I hadn't been advised to use vaseline but will put some on tomorrow to protect the healthy skin, thanks. My vet forgot to bring the factsheet with her which Derek Knottenbelt supplies which I hope has pointers to help your horse through the treatment.

One of our mares at work had this (neurotic Arab) and she was fine with just bute, if you are really worried you could try some sedalin but to be honest I would have though she will be fine

She's a big softy usually, but she's a big girl to be throwing her weight around if she did get upset and I didn't want her squashing my vet! At least I feel more confident in knowing that other horses have accepted the treatment without too much fuss.

That's good to hear! Update 1 day post cream application. Areas treated are quite swollen but she doesn't appear to be behaving as if she's in pain. Gave her a bute anyway as suggested by the vet. Sarcoids don't look any different at this stage.

My mare has had the Liverpool Cream treatment twice. It didn't seem to bother her at all, but it's her personality not to show when she is sore so I gave her bute for a few days just in case. Now I'm just waiting for the scabs to fall off which is taking forever.

Hi I am going to go down the route of Liverpool cream for my boy's sarcoid soon, it will be great if you can keep us updated on who things go please?

Thanks H x

Sadly I'm unable to treat my mare with Liverpool cream (all over her udders and inside of both thighs) as she kicks out so much: but she was like this from the start, not as a result of the Liv.cream.

We ended up removing the dangly ones with surgery (she was still kicking out with a local anaesthetic!) and really my only option with her is treatments with her food i.e Global Herbs Sarc-X and waiting till they get big again and cutting them off surgically.

I tried everything (even applying Liverpool cream whilst wearing a motor bike helmet) but ! soon realised it was only a matter of time that I would get hurt.

Good luck

Poor you Bugly. Hope the current treatment helps your mare. The good thing about my horse is she ID and very quiet but the power is there if she decided she'd had enough! Let's hope the head in a bucket of feed keeps working. As a matter of interest why after 30 odd years of horse ownership have I only heard about sarcoids over the last few years? Have they always been about but been ignored or are horses becoming more prone to getting them or have I been extremely lucky with my previous horses?

My arab mare started treatment for tvvo sarcoids last Tuesday. Today vvas her fifth and final application. She vvas sedated each time. Prior to the treatment my vet said that it vvould be traumatic for her, but she's been as good as gold. I started her on bute after the third application.
The treatment appears to be vvorking (fingers crossed) she's svvollen and a little sensitive though but othervvise ok. I have been advised to have her checked in four vveeks time before i ride again (sarcoid in girth area) as she may need another course. I knovv of a fevv other horses vvho have also had this treatment and its been successful every time.

Thanks Lotts_B that's good to hear that other horses have responded well to the cream. My girl had her second treatment today at 3/4 strength and needs two more treatments of full strength to leg crease and 3/4 strength to girth area, udder and inner thigh. swelling from Tuesday's treatment had gone this morning so she's on just one sachet of bute a day.

My mare is still on tvvo sachets of bute a day but she's doing really vvell (her sarcoids vvere very big). I think that she'll need another course though. She's doing really vvell, I vvalked her out in hand tonight and she vvas fab. My vet seems to think thats its going vvell too. Let me knovv hovv you get on. Everyone vvho i knovv vvho has used the cream has had great success - not heard anything bad yet. Fingers crossed for you all...

Hi,
My mare has been treated with Liverpool cream twice now (once last year, once this year) and at every application I have had she sedated. There were two reasons for this 1) she is a cow bag! and would most likely kick the vet 2) I wanted to make sure that the vet could apply the cream properly without having to worry about her moving/kicking etc. I figured that with the sedation she would make sure that every area that needed to be done would get a proper covering of cream.
With regard to discomfort I found that bute controlled this well and that she seemed much happier out 24hrs a day so that she could move round and it kept the swelling down.
Hope all goes well.

Thanks clarej
At the mo she is tolerating the vet but swishes her tail when it tickles. The swelling hasn't been as bad on the 2nd and 3rd application so I've kept her on just one sachet of bute per day, plus she lives out 24/7 all year anyway. Bad news is I've found a few more crusty lumps on her belly line/udder, so very despondant at the mo. Have to send off photos of these and await Prof K's advice. Means the vet will be making more visits now. Heyho that's how it goes with horses I guess. There's always something to worry ourselves about.

Don't be too despondant, they may drop off. My mare often gets them and then they suddenly disappear.

My mare is currently being treated for two sarcoids, she has others but unfortunately they're untreatable due to their size / location but they don't apper to be causing her any discomfort.

She's reacted really well to her current course of treatment. She's still on two bute a day but the swelling appears to have subsided and they're now looking scabby! She's been so good throughout, bless her as i know it can be pretty traumatic for them.

The only down side for me is that i can't ride her as one of the sarcoids that is being treated is in her girth area! Lots of walking in hand / bare back riding for me although she's a scatty arab so i'll be taking it easy!

Thanks again Lotts_B for the support. Let me know how the treatment goes especially with the one on the girth area of your mare. My filly has one on the lowest point of her belly right on girth line. Fortunately she is unbroken at present but I had wanted to start longlining with a saddle so that's had to be put on hold. Her girth sarcoid is just a crusty lump about the size of a 5p. I'm sure the vet will be unable to treat the new ones on her udder crease as they are very difficult to get at. Thank goodness she's quiet as I had to crouch right under her tummy to take flash pictures of them on Saturday for Prof K at Liverpool.
