My older mare had a lump, the size of half a small marble, on her tummy years ago. As far as I can remember, she had it when I bought her, or shortly after (9 years ago). Then 3 years ago it burst, a load of thick puss came out, and after a week or so it healed up and went away.

About the same time, another, similar sized lump came on the inside of her front leg, at the top. It was hard, and there was no hole or sign of infection. I had shown various vets over the years and they had all said not to worry and as long as it didnt grow, not to touch it.

Well, last week this 2nd lump burst and a load of thick puss has come out of it. It appears to be a fairly deep 'hole' in her leg (though considering the size, it is not a major issue!), and I guess because of the infection, it hasnt yet healed. I have been treating it with disinfectant, and sudocreme (to keep the flies off!).

I just wondered, having never had any dealings with them, if any kind of sarcoids are like this? I have the vet out next week anyway, so will get them to have a look, but I just wondered if anyone had experienced similar??

I have not heard of a sarcoid producing pus before? My lad had one removed on his chest and was dry and wart like - will be interested to hear what your vet thinks it is....

My mare has loads of sarcoids (2 confirmed by biopsy). She has had 3 do this. Both have been a lump about the size of a large pea, have suddenly grown - about double in size, then burst with pus. On one occasion it burst when i touched it (mega yuck!) and there was a small hard lump in the middle of the pus. With the other I just found a pussy wound. 2 have grown back, one hasn't. I suspect that a thorn prick/fly bite allowed an infection in that produced the pus. She also had walnut sized sarcoid (one of the biopsy ones) come off when the skin split - never found the lump as it happened when she was in the field. That one has come back & is now golf ball sized.

my old mare had a sarcoid on her leg, but it doesnt really sound like what you are describing - it grew very quickly and was oozing pus but it was more from the outside which was ulcerated, it didnt burst just kept growing. i remember at the time doing a lot of research into sarcoids and im sure there are different types, but this is my experience of them.
