My two year old filly has developed a sarcoid on her chest over the past few months. She lives out 24/7 and it hasn't been a problem during the summer. However, as the weather worsens I am thinking about rugging her but the sarcoid is in such a place that it will get rubbed. :(

So this is my question, would it be better for me to leave her unrugged through the winter (she's a haflinger x so is very hardy but it will make me feel very mean) or have the sarcoid removed (although the vet says that it is more than likely to grow back) ?

What would you do?

Hey, how big is the sarcoid?
My arab mare suffers from sarcoids and I had the exact same problem earlier on this year. Hers was quite large though. However, as she's extremely sensitive I had to put a fly rug on her but the rug actually rubbed the sarcoid and its now fallen off! I've also had sarcoids treated using the cream and a few banded. Must say, I'd always recommend not treatring unless you really have to as they just re appeared and were more aggressive post treatment. Its always best not to 'fiddle'. I've since been recommend Sarc-ex supplement which I put in her feed. Whatever you do, don't try any other treatments unless recommended by your vet. PM me if you need more info...

Hi Depends on the sarcoid. My (then) 2yo got some inner thigh, on 2 occasions they were blitzed with Liverpool treatment and sarc-ex (global herbs). My personal opinion is in a young horse get them dealt with ASAP and you have a good chance of them not coming back. My boy is 7 now and (touch wood) no probs. A friend was waiting for the vet to come out to look at a suspicious lump on her 4yo, she had already started with Sarc-ex, and the thing fell off before the vet came out.
