My horse has a rather unsightly sarcoid near his sheath. I'm currently using Thuja cream and echinacea tablets (to boost his immune system) with sarcoid tablets from equus health.
Although the sarcoid has definately improved, the recovery seems to have totally stopped (been using the above for two months) and I don't know what to try next. I would rather use something natural thats why I haven't tried Liverpool Cream. Has anyone got any ideas? Someone said my vet should band it, what do you reckon?

Thanks

my horse had a sarcoid and after speaking to the vet we decided that ringing it was the best course of action for my horse. she hates vets and her sarcoid was right under her tummy near her udder. there was no way she'd of let a vet put the cream on. the band was put on while she was sedated for another reason anyway and the sarcoid shrivled up and dropped off a few weeks later. i've not had any problems since.

One of mine (he's 12 now) has had 2 sarcoids- one on his eye- this was removed when he was a 4 yr old at Liphook and he had one removed last year by my vet that was on his sheath- My vet said that caustic cream was not really an option as my horse would get used to it being put on and then there is the risk of them lashing out as they get used to it. We could of applied to Liverpool for the cream however for the same reasons I decided against it and there was also the cost to consider and and it doesn't always work in every case. I have seen other people use the cream and it is very agressive as it almost burns the sarcoid away and one of the horses I saw had a large hole in its chest- it did clear up eventually but it took a long time.

Removal for my horse was the best option, he was back in work in a couple of days.
If a sarcoid has been surgically removed there is a risk that it could return, however we decided to try it. So far so good and the one on his eye has never returned- we were lucky that we had the sarcoids removed when they were tiny, so it was probably easier to remove.

I would speak to your vet and see what they recommendmy own personal choice is for removal but it depends on the horse and what you would prefer.

What ever option you decide- best of luck and hope your horse gets better.

Give thuja 200 in tablet form and nothing else. That will do the trick

Echinatia is probably not allowing the thuja to do its work. The immune system is working very well on its own

Hi Lorna,

Out of interest, what size was your horses sarcoid? I think maybe you are right but Fred's looks like a flattened marshmallow (excuse the explanation haha) and doesn't look like it has much of a stalk.
K27, I think you are right as I have also heard some strange reports on Liverpool cream and would rather remain natural as much as possible but I should probably have it taken off.
Thomas tank, does the echinecea stop the thuja from working? I never suspected it would as the tablet is taking orally and should only boost his immunity. It's very confusing knowing whats for the best

Thankyou all very much

hi there, it is confusing to know what to do for the best. i have had two mares that have both had to have theirs ringed. luckily that did the job. Although the second time i did this it was reccomended that i use wonder gel (by gold lable) to speed up the healing process. it is all natural and i saw brilliant effects. i also have people at my yard who have only used this on sarcoids and have seen 100% sucess.

there's a brilliant cream called bloodroot ointment (from Newmarket i think) which works very well.
certain types of sarcoid will just pop out like a big marble... possibly sedate the horse (cos of where it is!) and then either squeeze (some come out really easily) or get the vet to nick the surface of it with a blade, so it can come out. i had loads of this type taken off my mare by a vet.
good luck, hope it goes.

My daughter's 17hh 7 year old TB ex-point-to-pointer also had a sarcoid on his sheath when his then owner (a very old friend who is married to a vet) offered him to me to buy. He had used the "Liverpool treatment" (or rather his wife had!) and although the scab has long since dropped off, there is a smooth, round, marble-sized swelling still present. I must call my friend's wife (saw her last week but forgot to mention it) for her opinion. I'm keen to leave it alone at the moment, although must admit to being a "sarcoid virgin"!

Have used blood root ointment and my boys has improve, but i dont think I persisted fro long enough, so will treat again when he's not competing as it makes him a bit stiff, (the sarcoid is inside his hind leg). Also been advised by my trainer who has had fab result with neat tea tee oil applied as many times as possible a day to the sarcoid. Her mare had several, and they have now completely disappeared after using just tea tree.

Is black root the same, or similar to, black salve? I understand this is an extremely potent method of dealing naturally with melanomas (skin cancers) and similar. Has anyone out there tried it?

bloodroot is the same yes and is applied yourself rather than liverpool cream by the vet. you have to wear gloves tho.
you apply for 6 days then leave it to see what happens and re apply in a couple of weeks it does the same as liverpool cream but slower and not as nasty.
it isnt made at all the same as liverpool cream.
your sarciod sounds like an occult sarciod which you cant band off. they are the hardest to treat. we had 24 on our horse and the liverpool then followed by bloodroot after the twelve months seems to have done the trick, fingers crossed
