Sarcoids and neem oil

My little mare has a suspected sarcoid just in front of her udders. The vet has sent photos off for further opinions and said to try and keep it fly free - it looks like a warty kind of thing, not weeping or raw in any way and quite small. My question is - I usually use neem oil as fly repellent, but I understand it is not a good idea to put things that promote healing on sarcoids. I asked the vet but she had never heard of neem oil, just said that they were told to use a good fly repellent and weren't given a list of anything to avoid. Should I use something else in that area until we are certain what it is? If so, what? All the things I would normally use are also healing products - neem, lavender, sudocrem. I need something that is a barrier not just repellent as she seems to be exceptionally delicious poor girl.
Would I be safe using something like summer fly cream or udder cream? I know Leahurst suggest kerosene but I can't bring myself to use that on a pony, especially when she does so much mutual grooming with her friend.
 
Someone is bound to disagree with what I suggest but we are all in different parts of the world, with different options and advice.

My gelding has a number of sarcoids I was originally just giving thuja which I still have him on along with a couple of other remedies. I took photos 4 wks ago and emailed them to prof k, I marked urgent and fair play he replied next day, I paid fee for his advice & the protocol which I'm still waiting for, that was like I said 4 wks ago. I chased it yesterday. In the mean time they were looking sore I couldnt do nothing so I banded the bigger ones and giving him balanced nutrition feed low sugar diet & zinc. Also got some naf d-tox. So far the banded ones are shrinking, have dried up and one non banded small one fell off. He is also so much better in himself. I was worried about putting anything on the sarcoids in fear of making them worse but did put a tiny bit of castor oil on a couple of them, is neem oil similar? If it's not changing or it's not sore I would leave it till the autumn and treat then when there are less flies around, Liverpool cream & other prescription creams can leave nasty open wounds
 
Neem oil is nothing like castor oil, my experiences of it over the past couple of years are quite incredible healing properties.
The problem with keeping flies away is not necessarily related to after treating it (if indeed it needs treating) - it is just trying to prevent it getting worse or irritated by inevitable fly bites. The only way to stop them in that area is to apply a barrier.

My ponio has just undergone Liverpool treatment on his sarcoids. I have been emailing Professor Knottenbelt at Liverpool University. He said make a paste of 125g vaseline, invermectin (horse wormer) and splash of kerosene (the smelly one) if you want. You dont need to put kerosene in though. I also bought Battles summer fly cream (its bright yellow) to put on as has antiseptic properties in it. xx
 
I used a summer cream on my horse last year after his Liverpool cream treatment. I don't think it adversely affected the sarcoids, but a lot of them did come back up again. He has been treated again this year; more cream, and this time laser treatment as well, so I will be looking for some kind off fly control because I now live in a notoriously midgey area of Scotland. In the first instance I think I may just put Vaseline on them to actually stop the flies landing on the sarcoids. Interested in the Invermectin though, wonder how that would be a deterrent. Somewhere I seem to recall I've seen something about someone using Vick as a deterrent.

I also thought about using vaseline just to stop flies.
 
Sudocrem is a healing product too?! Maybe I'm being too paranoid, but I've read so many times on here an elsewhere not to use healing products on sarcoids!
 
Funnily enough, I used Sudocreme last year on his sarcoids to keep the flies off......and a lot of them grew back. Maybe they were going to grow back anyway, but I've since read that there is some evidence to say don't put any cream on that has an 'repairing' element to it because the sarcoid may respond by growing. That is why this year I'm only going to use Vaseline to stop them landing on the sarcoids.

Prof K told me thats what he uses - 125g vaseline, invermectin and can put spot of kerosene (the smelly one) if want but dont have to.
Here is his email address: Knottenbelt, Derek <knotty@liverpool.ac.uk> if you want to hear it for yourself. He said it is fine to put on sarcoids and open wounds as doesnt effect healing and or encourage "bad" growth.
 
I've used Neem oil on my pony's sarcoids and weirdly the biggest one shrunk way back and several others fell off and haven't regrown. I'm continuing to put Neem oil on them to keep the flies off but also (crossing fingers and touching wood) it seems to dry them out and cause them to come off. My vet was very impressed as the treatment she'd recommended unfortunately wasn't successful.
