I know the answer is ring the vet and I will do that, but someone I trust also said why not leave it for a month or so as its a young horse is may clear up???

All the stuff I read on sarcoids sound scary although this one isn't in a particularly bad place.

I would really appreciate any experiences - there are a couple of newly qualified vets at the practice I use and while I think they are great, I just want to have as much information as possible when they come so can have informed discussion about treatment.

Thanks!!!

Where is it, how big is it and what does it look like? I have had a few youngsters that have had them and grow out of them as their immuune system is getting established. (like kids and warts) My mare thats has just turned 5 had a big one in her armpit last year and I just covered it in tea tree oil a few times a week over the winter and it has gone completely now.

I would be very tempted to wait if it isn't being a hinderance as treating them in teh summer can be a nightmare anyway due to the flies.

I wouldn't hesitate to get them removed. I've seen them removed successfully off youngsters, never to re-apppear.

The sarcoids are on the inside hind leg right at the top so fairly protected.

Thanks everyone for your feedback ... I think I will get vet to have a look but not do anything until the end of the summer unless it changes dramatically or they have a very good reason for recommending action earlier - the flies are horrible at the moment so that is a useful point.

Is it worth feeding a supplement - are sarcoids a virus and does anyone know if they are connected with being a bit run down?

I thought Jesse had a sarcoid or two but the vet looked at them today and didn't think they were. This is very impressive news for a pony that cannot go a week without seeing a vet. I did ask what they were and he said something like damaged folicals under the skin or something which can easily be removed but just leave them for the moment if you have no plans to show him. I think given the current state of his leg the show ring is a long way off. Now I was convinced they were sacroids and worrying how I was going to pay for the treatment, if the insurance company was finally going to tell me and my fat pony where to go so it's a big releif. If we're talking about a plainish lump then I would maybe leave it for a little while and see if it changes. I've have a sarcoid before which the vet wanted to watch for a while. The quicker you catch them the more chance of full treatment but I doubt it will change over night.

both my mares have had sarcoids. older mare had a couple removed by freezing (no return so far after about 6 years), and liverpool cream on my younger mare who got several them at about 5. (one in sensitive area needed additional treatment but now seems sorted. No return at this time.

my only comment would be to be aware of your insurance situation. both my girls now have exclusions for sarcoids, and warts. insurance will usually only cover treatment in the first year.
they would not pay out on my older mare as i had known about her sarcoids for longer. when i said i followed vets advice to keep an eye but not do anything they informed me i should have told them anyway. i asked what they would have done and was told 'pay for treatmnet in the first year and then exclude'. i pointed out the vet said do not treat at this stage and they said they would have made a note on her file and excluded after the year regardless. a 'no win' situation really.

just to say check it out.

I had my old horses sarcoid removed by having it cut out at the vets as it was a fibrolistic one friends horse had a few frozen off they were varrucas sarcoids all depends on which type it is could be one of many i found some info on the web .
others can just be left if it doesnt appear to have grown i just decided to have his removed think it was about £165 and it never came back but as perce says above the insurance will exclude if they ever do come back

if it really is a sarcoid and not some other skin ailment i would get it removed ASAP.
the ones people speak of suddenly disappearing on their own very likely are not sarcoids in the first place.

My horse had one a 4 yrs old had one just behind his girth, the vet said because he was young to leave it and see if it goes, he did offer to treat it if that what i wanted.
It went after a few months and never returned.

My new mare also has one which i'm going to leave till end of the summer and see what happens, I think some tiem messing can make them worse.

sarcoids dont tend to go away by themselves as they are a virus and can spread my horse taz has had sarcoids and i got them treated and my insurance paid out on it for the first year he's got another few now which wont be covered by my isurance but i would say to contact your vet to get them treated

I think this will help you. I have had different horse with different types of Sarcoids but I would air on the side of caution when it comes to the treatment as I have had more than one bad experience with treatments on sarcoids. (mainly the rubber band to remove apporach, this can be very messy!)

sarcoid is a generically used term for growths or odd lumps on horses.....

a true sarcoid is actually a cancerous growth/tumour......

some do just go away on their own, others are there to stay, even if you remove they come back.

Id say remove it, and just hope it doesnt come back!

if its where you say, prob shouldnt cause too many problems!

Hi, My gelding has sarcoids. One is faily big and looks like a raspberry and the other is a flat crusty on in his ear. The raspberry one is near his sheath and it dropped of with the help of camrosa but it appears to have grown bigger. Whoops. I am not worried at all as he isnt bothered and plus I wouldnt get them taken off whilst in the summer. But I have heard that there is a new supplement that is out that is supposed to be very good for sarcoids. Does anyone know about this?
