My new horse has 3 sarcoids, the verucca type. One is on her eyelid, the other two on her neck. They don't seem to bother her, should I look into treatment or leave them?

I think it can depend on the age of the horse and where they are as to whether you treat one. Mine had one behind his ear which developed after I bought him when he was four. Obviously had to come off as couldn't put a bridle on otherwise.

His was cut out, and then the wound was frozen, not sewn up. Freezing the wound is supposed to prevent another forming as does not leave as much scar tissue (abnormal cells which could lead to more sarcoids - or so I have been told). Haven't got one back - yet!

But we have a retired horsey who is 24 who has a few on his back leg. They do not affect him in any way, and tbh it wouldn't be worth the bill to treat them. But as long as he is happy, then its fine imo.

The advice I have had from 2 different vets is leave unless they are causing problems as if treatment fails it can make them worse. If you google sarcoids you will find a website by Prof Knottenbelt that is very informative.

Get them removed asap while they are small (if the are small) before they grow any bigger an ulcerate etc, my other horse had a cluster of them under his hind legs near his wedding tackle, vet came, cut them out, sewed him up, job was a good un, never came back.

....not always that simple though.

Had the vet out today and she said "Liverpool cream". So have taken photos and they are being sent off to decide if the one near the eye can be treated with the cream.
