Hi!

My 8-year old TB x ISH mare developed a small, hard nodular lump very suddenly. I have been advised by the yard manager to keep an eye on it and watch for any changes in size or texture. It has been there for two weeks and hasn’t changed. I have felt around the area next to it and there is another small, pea shaped bump next to it but under the skin. Any advice would be gratefully received!

I would get the vet to take a look so you know what you are dealing with especially as there is another one nearby, it is probably nothing to worry about but only a vet can tell you what it is.

When mine had something similar it turned out to be an embedded bit of thorn which the pony had grown a lump around, I had it removed and they found the thorn in the middle. I had suspected a sarcoid but it turned out not to be.

Did the vet remove it?

I would get the vet to look. We had a lump removed from The Beast that turned out to be a dermal inclusion cyst. Vet was concerned it might be a melanoma and it was in a high motion area so he wanted to remove while it was a managable size rather than wait and see. Bit annoying that she went through all that for a cyst but I'd rather that way then end up with a massive lump that needed a huge area taken off to remove.

So yeah. Get the vet to look.

Yes, removed the lump and sent it off for analysis which is when I found out it was an encysted thorn. A relief as I was worried it was something nasty.
Thanks 😊 did you take a photo of the lump by any chance? I’m interested to see if it looks similar.

No I didn't sorry. It looked and felt like a dried pea was under the skin. If you post a picture I'll tell you.

Yep - that's a big pea. Bigger than the one I found at the base of a 2yo's ear - hard as a rock - but a little bit of pus. My vet hadn't seen one before - turned out to be 'tooth in ear' - a dentigerous cyst. It had to be removed by a specialist - about £800 bloody quid! I hoped that would be the end of his 'teeth' probems - bt when we came to back him, it was a constant tongue over bit problem. TWO wolf teeth in the 'wrong' place (other than just in his mouth) - lower jaw ad snug inside the 6's!! Luckily my very good EDT found them - and removed them - only needed a stray vet to trank him.
