Sarcoids, what would you do?

This is the short version!
I started working with a horse nearly 5months ago, partner decided he would buy her as a surprise and is paying monthly for her,.
16hh 7year old coloured mare unbacked-I moved her upto my yard to make it easier whilst working with her and fitting her in with my other horses.
Mare is a bit daft with water so had never washed her off till about 4 weeks ago when we got sweaty in the school and have been working on leading up to this point of being able to use sponge and water on her. Whilst washing her off on her udder I found some marks which I thought were sarcoids. I asked her owner she said she had never seen them before she has had the horse from a youngster. I went to show my mother the marks and queue me getting kicked, the horse doesn't seem to like the area being touched at all. Vet has seen her and confirmed 2 different types and told me if he was vetting her he would advise me to send her back. he said that possible these have been treated before as she has such a disliking of anyone touching the area.

I do love this horse, but my issue is although I want to keep her I am not happy to pay the original asking price so a bit of a moral dilemma!!! Am I in the wrong?

What would you do........
 
sorry - the asking price was decided when you bought the horse - when you are paying off a purchase you don't get to decide that it is less valuable now because you found something you didn't like - if you had paid off the horse in full originally you wouldn' tgo back and ask for a refund.You should have vetted her before agreeding to sign (I'm assuming you have been sensible enough to get a contract in place?)

you can try and negotiate but were I the seller I'd tell you to pay in full.

If that is the only thing that she failed on, then you want to think long and hard on this decision and do not make it lightly. Ask your vet what treatment they recommend and see if you can afford it and the long term on going check ups every 6 weeks. My mare passed her vet but sarcoids came a few weeks after she moved here, as a result of the stress of the move.

Luckily for me she was fully insured before we found them, that said we have been treating them since autumn last year. Only now are we heading to a good finish, we had vet visits every other day doing one type of treatment and we were doing the other type ever morning and evening for 10 days. Only to repeat this twice more as results were inconclusive and suspect. Without the insurance it would have been very costly - I wish you luck in deciding what you want to do.

Certainly I would ask for a discount as some people would be turned off making her harder to sell

I am missing something your partner has a contract to buy a horse at a certain price, he has had it 5 months and now you want to haggle about the price?
This is why I would never sell by instalments. If he has not paid in full and you decide not to pay the full amount the owner could say you have reneged on the agreement and demand the horse back or take you to the small claims for the rest of the money.
 
The horse moved to our yard nearly 5 weeks ago. The price was decided and then agreed monthly payments would be made at the end of each month subsequently only 1 payment has been made with the other due next week. I don't want to haggle on the price as such but when my vet said that I need to remember that what ever she costs to buy she is not going to hold that value and I'm just throwing my money away, I did think of returning (for a split 2nd) the horse but the owner doesn't have the money or space for her back I just feel a bit hood winked my point was that my vet seems to think she has had these for some time and yes if I had paid for her in full I would have no chance of getting some money back for her, but surely I have rights too and the horse was not sold to me as having any medical issues and the moment I found them I sought advice. I get what you saying honetpot but 2 sides to this buyer and seller both peeved and just want what's best for the horse, which I do believe is with me :)
 
Sarcoids can just pop up.

My lad I had him nearly a year and we found a big red golf ball sarcoid up high under his thigh. He hated the inside of that leg being touched and that explained why.
We tried laser but that didn't get all of it so did the liver pool cream which has removed it and only a little line scar is left.

If you didn't give her a good check over your self or get a vet to do it before agreeing to the asking price then it's stuff happens live and learn and move on in my book.

You could have had her a year and they pop up, would you ask for your money back then?
 
You have no idea if they where there when your partner decided to buy the horse .
Your partner has a contract with the he bought the horse from and must fulfil it .
The sarcoids are clearly bothering the horse and need a vet to deal with them you need to keep any open ones covered with a suitable cream to act as barrier for flys and wounds on other horses on the yard need to kept covered as well .
Treatment will depend on the type and location , sadly there' a chance the horse will develop them through out it's life .

Yes, you had the right to inspect the horse over four months that you worked with it before you bought it, and to have it vetted.

Prove it did. Sarcoids appear after moving on a frequent basis.Do you think she would have accepted payment in installments if she had known?

You have to pay the other half.



For the sake of the seller, I'm hoping that as a first time poster with a controversial first post, you're a troll. But if not, pay up, you owe the money.
 
It sounds to me as though you didn't have this mare vetted before buying her ??

You (or your partner) have bought this mare and it is now your responsibility to pay the previous owner the agreed price AND to get the appropriate treatment for the mare.

I doubt the owner will want the horse back it has a serious problem and one that often appears when a horse moves yards .

The owner wasn't under any legal obligation to point out the sarcoids (if she even knew about them - she genuinely may not have, as others have pointed out, they do often appear overnight, I know my youngster's did). It was up to you to check the horse thoroughly and have it vetted - you chose not to. Sorry but legally I don't think you have a leg to stand on.

Some really good responses,and I have taken them on board. Some of the comments mentioned about the mare going back the owner doesn't want her back (realistically I don't want her to go back either) and although she did she say would like first refusal should I ever decide to get rid of her.
The Mare wasn't vetted I stupidly trusted someone who I knew. I will never find out if she knew about the sarcoids or not but I'm just trying to make the best of a bad situation and do what's right for the horse. The horse is staying she isn't going anywhere,the vet is coming back to me with a treatment plan.

Mine had sarcoids when I bought him - and it was flagged up by the vet.

He had had four homes in the year I bought him - IMO this was very stressful and caused his immune system issues. I put him on Sarc Ex from Global Herbs, but it was only when I coupled this with their Immuplus that the sarcoids disappeared.

Personally I would never go down the Liverpool treatment route - in my limited experience it is an immunity system problem, generally brought on by stress. I have seen failures in the Liverpool treatment and it is fairly vicious and painful- happily we got shot of over five sarcoids and have had no return of them in over 6 years.
 
i dont think your in the wrong - if they have already been treated then of course the owner knew. Really unfair to lie when selling a horse - next person just gets a load of heartache and expense
 
MY mare passed the vet and developed sarcoids a few weeks after she moved, treatment is slow but seems to improve a bit, just starting the course of Liverpool cream today, vet back Saturday.
