Would sarcoids stop you buying a promising 4 yr old pony for eventing? How about a 5 yr old with a good competition record, ie a few DCs BE90 with good dressage scores?

i think it would depend where they were (would it stop you putting tack on?) and how bad they were.

we've had 2 now with sarcoids - one was just one sarcoid, and the current one has about 8! - but we've been fortunate that they've been a)treatable with liverpool cream and b)in places that don't interfere with tack.

Won't interfere with tack at the moment, but worry that as she has quite a lot as a 4 yr old, she may develop more and they may become a problem?

If you think she has everything else you want then I say ask a vets opinion. Most are treatable, even if they aren't pretty before, during or immediately after.

Tom's latest 3 which had cream on them are now (5wks since last treatment) looking like he's just pulled a piece of skin off. Before treatment they were about an inch in diameter and stood proud of his skin by about 1/4 inch.

ETA - the last 2 head had done are now totally invisible, you can only tell where they were cos the skin feels kind of thickened under his coat.

Yes it would

my tb got them as a four year old he is now 6 and has no more and the others have been treated so you would never know, i think it depends on how fitting the pony is to you and whether you would beable to find another one like it

Have asked vet, which is why I think they're sarcoids - seemed to be more pessimistic than optimistic, but then the pony has just won its 1st ODE (3rd ever ridden comp) after a week at PC camp with a double clear and a dressage of 29. Only been under saddle for 2 months, and was in the top ride at camp.

Really like the pony. Fantatstic attitude, scope to burn, and have had PC instructor on JRN selection committee say she really rates her.

What to do? She's not mine as I am bringing her on to sell, but I'm so tempted to buy her as they want her sold by end of summer for a small sum, and I think we could run her on and make a lot more - but then she seems to have sarcoids.....?

If you know the horse and like her, then you have to weigh up the pros and cons and see what you think will happen.

They may be easily treated and then you will have a great pony/profit.

If it was an unknown horse to me then I would not touch I am afraid

I couldn't have afforded mine if he hadn't had a sarcoid. He has one inside his back leg. Had it as a 5 year old and is now 11. He's your very hard to find very sensible, willing to do anything, won money BSJA, laid back but still has a personality type.
If it was the only thing negative and brought the price right down then no it wouldn't put me off. If there was any other 'deal breaker' I would have to think very long and hard.

Mine has quite a few between his back legs and though we treated some successfully last year and are treating a couple currently, I don't see them as a particular problem - certainly not life or death compared to the grass sickness he had, or as annoying as his sweet itch! They tend to lie dormant in the winter and it's just the flies in the summer that make them flare up, but they don't affect his performance in any way.

If the boot were on the other foot and I were looking to buy him, then if everything else was right and you could get some vet history to say that the sarcoids were relatively stable and hadn't affected performance in the past, then I would buy, but expect some discount on the price. In my mind, I would then be getting a bargain!

Try sarc x by global herbs. My welsh cob developed a perioccular sarcoid which is incredibly difficult to treat.I used sarc x for 18 months after which the sarcoid disappeared.I continue to use a maintenance dose of sarc x and have had no further problems.I would buy a horse with sarcoids as long as they are not likely to cause complications, and are treatable.
