sat nav suitable for 4*4 and trailer

has anyone got any suggetions as to which one works well when towing, mine is stupid and keeps sending me down the narrowest of roads/tracks etc, tried to send me down a footpath the other day. The final straw was sunday when it sent me up a monumental hill that was really really narrow, thankfully I had decided to leave the horse at home and just go and watch, but ended up doing a massive reverse job down the hill for a horse box coming the other way eek!
I only have quickest route or fastest route, need a choice suitable for some horse shows lol.
Does any body have any suggestions, hopefully not to expensive. thanks in anticipation
 
My Garmin has a option where you can select it for avoiding u turns and narrow roads.
You may be best off getting one that truck drivers use which definitely avoid narrow roads having borrowed one from a friend before.
 
I have a pro nav for my horsebox, it lets you choose shortest to keep to main roads. It also lets you put in height, weight, width and length so it avoids unsuitable routes.

I also check routes beforehand on a map so I check if my journey will mean going on small country roads because that's the only way and if it's a yard or competition venue I will check their directions online as they often put the best route and tell you if you need to avoid a particular road.
 
thank you for your replies, i was beginning to think we must just all get lost or go down the narrow lanes .lol, i got my road atlas out on saturday to start checking! will go and look for a pro nav.
 
mmm, its not so easy to remember the route looking at map beforehand! but i have got it out to try. no good a driving car and reading map book at same time! easier to drive and listen to the lady who lies!! lol
 
what ever you get, get one that can be updated (or can you update yours)

I have a garmin Nuvi and it is a super bit of kit.

I do both, I check my route before the night before and sometimes even run the route on the satnav and check it against the map.

But I do find it invaluable, before I might have printed instructions (and both RAC and AA routeplanner tried to send me down some bridlepaths, luckily they were local so I knew they weren't roads) and the instructions/map always seemed to slide onto the floor at just as I was coming up to a tricky junction.
 
There will always be glitches with satnavs as they rely on human input of data to work & humans are fallable.

I have a Garmin Nuvi & can alter the setting on it from car to lorry (plus other settings) so I don't get sent down narrow lanes. I presume other makes also have this facility? You can also avoid motorways or toll roads etc plus various other settings can be changed.

Although I've had a few issues, have been told to turn down non existant roads on occasions, on the whole it's been good. ;)
 
My Tom Tom has never taken me on dodgy routes, mainly because I ask for the fastest route so it normally chooses good roads like motorways and A roads. I just went on Ebay thinking I'll look for a cheap Tom Tom model and I found one at £30, it works fine. I had to update the maps on its SD card but that was no problem. I also think its good to keep your own eyes on the road signs and not rely on the sat nav 100%.
