My Mum would love one of these - but in our family we don't believe in paying high prices for pedigree dogs when there are thousands of unwanted/neglected/ill-treated dogs out there needing a home. So where would we look for a rescue dog that looked like a sausage?

Any ideas?

LMAO!! - They are so cute!!

No idea I'm afraid general rescue centres I guess, although I'm sure there must be a specific centre for sausages!!

They are lovely dogs, we got ours as a rescue from an elderly lady by word of mouth he was a mini smooth haired called Timmy he was a little sod but gave us 9 years of pure pleasure they are super characters and behave like spoilt little old men, he died last year and the whole family was devasted y aunthas just bought a longhaired puppy who seems to have similar personality traits, he costa fair bit thought, I think they are quiet a fashionable breed to own at the moment.

Such a pity you're not over this way. There are *so* many dachshunds in rescue. My SIL recently adopted a JRT/Dachshund puppy, Crow

Hope you find yourself a doxie!

Thanks Shadowflame for taking the time to look. I'm afraid it goes again our principles to pay money for puppies when there are dogs in rescue centres looking for homes.

Thanks anyway.

I do understand your principals about having a rescue dog, but if you are intent on having a Dachshund, then chances are you're not going to find one in a rescue centre. I looked for a long while for my two dogs, one of which was a rescue dog. Out of all the time I looked and at all the centres I looked at, I only ever saw one Dachshund, and she was claimed by her owner a couple of days after she went in. If you are going to have a rescue, most of the time you have to compromise (sp?) when it comes to what type/breed you have - it all depends on what they have in at the time.

I wanted to take on a second rescue for my second dog, but I had my heart set on a particular breed which is rare in the UK. Because of this I had to buy a puppy from a breeder, for a LOT more money than I was planning to spend, but she was worth it. I know that she is going to be brought up the way I want her to be, I know the breeder was reputable and I got the chance to see both parents, both of which had fantastic temperaments. I don't have anything against rescues (as I've already said, I have a rescue myself), but you can't guarantee anything with them.

Like Prose said, too bad you're not here. There are quite a few dachshunds in rescue over here. They are quite popular and over bred. My mom would probably post you her longhair George. He is quite a talented food thief. He once opened the fridge and ate 2# of raw bacon. Gave him pancreatitis that resulted in a $200 vet bill. But as he is quite fat, the postage would be outrageous!

Good luck in finding a dachsie.

Gratuitous excuse to post a photo of my standard wirehaired dachshund DJ:

They're fantastic dogs, great characters. DJ is the sweetest (and greediest!) dog you'd ever want to meet. She adores people and dogs and hiding under her fleecy blankets

Interesting to see dachshunds are seen a lot in rescue centres in the US - I'm afraid I'd have to agree you'd be lucky to find one over here. I'm also against the idea of paying for a pedigree when there are so many rescues out there, but I really did want a dachshund and ended up buying a puppy. He's worth every penny though, and at least you can be fairly sure of how a pup should turn out.

We always knew it would not be an easy task. We are prepared to look around and wait. Yes we may not be lucky and to be honest we will compromise on the dog rather than buy a pup from a breeder. It's just something we feel really strongly about. They are beautiful dogs and you are very lucky to have yours. Please add a photo - there seems to be quite a lot of Sausage lovers out there

We've spoken to the centre - it may be that our timing is a bit premature as my Mum still has 2 months left to work. I will contact them again a little nearer the time she is due to finish on the off chance she is still there but understandably they cannot hold her and neither us nor them want a dog to go to a new home where 24 hour care is not available in her early days. It has given us hope that perhaps we will find one and I really hope that little dog finds a great home - she is gorgeous! Thanks for your help.

I will post a picture of George if I can find one and figure out how. Loved the picture of DJ, standard wires are my favorite. I currently have one standard wire, Whopper, and my daughter has a mini wire, Billy. Billy isn't aware he only weighs 10# and thinks he's a pit bull. We are taking Whopper and Billy to a dachshund field trial this weekend. It is a hunting contest. They are run in pairs and are judged on how well the track a rabbit. It's great fun. Whopper has around 4 points toward his field championship, he's already a conformation champion. Billy just runs around and has a good time but my child gets a kick out of it.

The family I used to work for had a ginger wirehaired dachshund with a touch of terrier in. She is just fantastic. She taught my dog to sleep under the duvet and is wonderful with children. She even got semi adopted by a family down the road who called her Veronica...!!!
