Saving treats?

My longhaired dachshund has an odd habit - if I give him a hide bone, or marrowbone biscuit, or any kind of treat when leaving the house, he won't eat it until we return! He'll put it in his bed and save it for when we come back. It's the same if he's halfway through something - it just goes in the bed and isn't touched until someone is back in the house.

Anybody know why this is?! He is quite a nervous dog - generally barks at strangers, doesn't mix well with other dogs. We did all the puppy classes and socialisation when he was a pup, but he was attacked by a springer at about 9 months old and has never been the same since

Moving to the country hasn't helped either, it's lovely and quiet but he rarely encounters new people on walks unless I deliberately take him into town. I wonder if the nervousness relates to the treat hoarding?

My springer does this and she'll only eat her dry food if you stand out the kitchen with her, she'll eat them if I'm preparing food or making drinks in the kitchen and loves it if you stroke her while she's eating and waggs her tail constantly and looks round to see if you're still there. we rehomed her and one of her previous owners used to shut her in a cupboard when they had visitors, I think she thought we were going to shut her in the kitchen, she had issues with this at night when we first had her, she's not a chewer and she was 1 when we had her so we just let her stay in the living room and kitchen at night, she takes herself off behind the chair when she knows its the time I usually go to bed. She's 3 in March and is a dream to own

Our Retriever does this. There's someone at home with him most of the time but if we're going out and leave him a bonio it's usually still sitting there when we get in. No idea why he does this and is definitely not a nervous thing - he's one of the most confident dogs I've ever met! (Too confident sometimes!) I think he's just got into the routine of settling down to sleep until we return.

Stan never touches his chews or treats when we're out, I'm almost 100% cretain it's because he sees his 'alone' time as sleep time, he falls asleep as we walk out of the door and wakes up as we come back in.
