Went to the Bedale point to point- fantastic day, burning sunshine...

Decided to go and sit next to one of the fences for one of the last races seeing as we hadn't really seen much action all day due to gossiping by beer tent. Got perfect vantage point right next to the jump.

Horses flew over but one fell and the jockey took a nasty tumble. I was about to get ready to ditch the crutches and have to catch it after it leapt up but sadly it didn't. Struggled on the floor for a bit and then died. VERY sad, it had a broken neck.

Jockey took a very long time to get up too but I believe he did walk away in the end so fingers crossed he is ok... very nasty accident.

Sorry for the pointless depressing post. Just made me think, and somewhere tonight all the people who worked so hard with that horse to get it to where it was will be in pieces. My heart really goes out to them.

That's very sad

I saw a horse fall at a P2P a couple of years ago and I think that was PTS at the scene too- saw a flat bed trailer go over with a tarp to take it away

It is such a shame for all the people who cared for it and trained it etc

Yes, very very sad.

Have to say though those who were working at the event dealt with the situation very well as far as I could see. They seemed so calm and professional and very quickly got done what needed doing without fuss.

Aww what a crappy thing to see. Poor horse and poor connections - my heart goes out to them.

At least comfort can be drawn from the fact that it was all over relatively quickly.

Big hugs x

Very sad. Heart goes out to the team who work with the horse.
I was fence judging at our college horse trials 3 years ago and a horse died at our fence. I knew the rider too. Very hard to come to terms with. We were thanked by all for our quickness to the scene and for the first aid we give the girl but it really scared us just how quickly it can happen. We were only 16 at the time.

ive seen two-one at a point to point the horse got up and its front leg was stuck out at an angle so the vet had to shoot it there and then, and then at a pony club event the horse brock its spine and had to be shot-that one was worse because i knew the pony and the girl. She was devastated-you never would have thought it it was only 2'6 xc.Its horrible.

How horrible, I take comfort from these things by knowing the horse died doing what it loved to do.

What a terrible thing to spoil the day - hope your not too down because of it.

And that is what made me think... all it takes is an awkward unlucky fall and it's game over.

I got shivers up my spine reading that. It's such a tragic thought.

How horrible.
At a 2"3, a pony galloped up the hill and collapsed-heart attack. Really made me think about getting fit. It is so awful to lose one.

I've been to P2P twice and both times I've seen horses die, thats why I don't go anymore, its too sad to see. They do deal with it very well though.

It really makes you think does'nt it

How sad, we had a horse fall at a p2p a couple of years back.

He made it home but had practically shattered his shoulder and also fractured his pelvis, we did all we could but he had to be PTS.

Very sad. Luckily after years of p2p-ing he is the only one we had to have PTS.

Seen others though at races, its never nice.

That's very sad for all concerned and all those watching.I cannot go to watch p2p anymore for that reason. The three times i went three horses died.It sad when the screens go around and the meat wagon makes it's way across. The third and last time i went the horse made it round the course and back to the unsaddling enclosure and was being cooled down by the groom when it went down in the lorry park and died of a heart attack right in front of us.Very sad indeed.

I was at Rossdales with PF and her baby and the horse in the next 'booth' dropped dead in front of its owner (a young girl) it was very, very sad and reminded me how lucky I was that my foalie (who had cut himself running away from a loose dog) was not in a life-threatening situation although I was absolutely LIVID about it at the time (I remember the owner of the dog saying it wasn't used to horses... so why was it loose????

)...
I've seen a few horses drop dead at polo as well. Always horrible

How awful

, I've never seen a horse die like that...and I don't particularly want to...as others have said, at least the horse died relatively quickly and was doing what he loved doing.

What a nightmare

I don't know if this is just me but there seems to be a lot of equestrian related deaths being discussed recently (eventing, racing). Today I got a junk mail containing an animal aid leaflet saying 'every year around 375 horses are raced to death in the UK' AND there is a rather horrible picture of a horse during a race with his foreleg broken very badly (literally just dangling).
Don't get me wrong, I am not against racing but the fact that we use those wonderful animals in a way that so many of them suffer makes me feel bad

It's sad that horse related sports should be getting such bad publicity instead of growing strong
