I was driving down the road today, and I saw a man walking with a very excitable dog, an absolutely gorgeous staffy.

The dog was seriously pulling on the lead and he kicked it a couple of times. It all happened so fast and I didn't really acknowledge/notice it til I was passing. In the rear view mirror I saw dog was on his back and he had started dragging him. There wasn't anywhere to pull in and even take a video, and the man to be honest (sorry if I sound like a judgmental bitch) looked like a complete thug so I don't know if I would have felt comfortable pulling over anyway, and I had Fodhla in the car.

Wwyd in that scenario? I feel absolutely sick about it and I feel awful that I did nothing. I'm not usually so passive. Had a bad experience with an aggressive driver the other day so dunno if that's why I was a bit wary. If I had stopped and challenged him I could have made matters worse, or if I took evidence what's the chances of anything even being done about it?

Between this and OH getting bitten a few weeks ago I feel like I'm seeing a serious amount of bad dog ownership lately-probably because I'm paying more attention now :(

I just feel absolutely awful no dog should have to live like that, some people aren't fit to have animals.

I don’t know what you could have done without placing yourself at risk and probably inflaming this man’s temper further so he inflicted more abuse on the poor dog. Years ago I saw a young man with a very young staffie puppy in Exeter. Some girls stopped to coo over it and he lifted the pup on his shoe and launched it at their feet. I’ve never forgotten it.

That's horrendous. Poor dog and poor everyone who had to witness it. I think lately I'm just very aware of the fact that a) people are violent and b) I'm a not very strong woman and c) I had my own sweet dog with me and I would never forgive myself if something had somehow happened her too or if she got frightened.

It makes me sick that animal abuse is a crime that just seems to go unpunished-like if I saw a person being assaulted in the street I wouldn't hesitate to call the police. I can't speak for all areas but in mine there's no way they would turn up for a man kicking his dog.

I would not just drive past. I would ring the police and take a video if I didn't feel comfortable approaching the person. This is the best way to achieve getting the dog off the man.

I do agree in theory Susie I really do, but there was no where to stop safely. It's a dual carriage way with a walk way separated by railings along side it (on the Westlink, for any local people) so impossible to stop when you're going at that speed and there's no laybys without causing a collosal accident. Like I said I would have pulled over if at all possible even just to take a video, but I'm not sure I would have pulled over and actually confronted the man if the location was different, for reasons I mentioned up thread.

As for police, I'd really like to think they'd have done something if I rang saying I saw a random man kick his dog next to the westlink this morning, but I know for a fact they wouldn't. Maybe in other places they would, but policing in NI is... lacking to put it politely.

Well no you wouldn't want to stop on the Westlink but I bet there's a lot of cctv cameras there, so it might be worth reporting it to the police and uspca.
