At witton today all i heard was a horse going mad nextdoor but one in the box and rider rushing to the box, i went to help and all i saw was a front leg hanging down through the side locker

horse had a strop as his friend had left him reared up and his feet went through the lockers from the inside

he got himself free but had cut his leg all open and nicked an artery so yes lots of blood. Vet came very fast and stapled his leg up and gave him loads of painkillers and said he should be ok it look worse than it is.
We have lockers in our lorry and thats one thing i have never thought of happening boss is thinking of having the plated in steel to make them alot stronger.

On a happier note Joss OH had a fab day sure she will fill you in

Get some thick sloped checkerplate on your locker boxes asap. Most cannot handle 600kg of horse on a small area, plus the slope makes it hard to stay up and stick their head through the roof!

A friend of mine had a grade A do this at the height of their career, tendon injury was permanent so ended their jumping days. If the horse hadn't been wearing boots it would have completely severed the tendon.

This is why I gave up living space, so there were no lockers in the horse area.

We have had ours sloped and double thickness because Tink nearly tore the 1st lot off out lorry!!
I swear if I was to ever get a new lorry I would not have tack lockers infront of the horses.

ewww...thats not something i had ever considered happening...obviously have seen horses go up onto the tack lockers but have always got back down again without incident

Thank goodness the horse was ok though the injury sounds bad enough.

I'm so pleased that our new lorry has tack lockers at the front, I witnessed a friend's horse get up on the tack lockers in her lorry and even though it didn't injure itself it was enough to convince me that I didn't want rear tack lockers. I'd rather have less storage space, oh and the front tack lockers are a little bit deeper so you can actually get a dressage saddle on the rack and still close the door which is impossible in the rear ones!

Thats sounds horrid

I am glad too that our new tack lockers are in the living bit, I always though my horse would get up on ones in the horse bit.

Hope it recovers well

The vet stayed with it a long time and i didnt get the riders name however i see her alot at events so will ask her how he is. I hope i never see anything like that again and so glad he didnt do an artery.

Thats why we didn't have tack lockers in the horse area (had under floor storage instead). I've heard of this happening a few times. The trouble is damp gets into the glasonite or plywood of the locker and weakens it and you don't realise until this happens.

Sounds really horrific!!! Glad it wasn't any worse!

Our old lorry had tack locker under horse's heads.

Our recent one does not for 2 main reasons:

Our vet told us that if you travel horses for more than 2 - 3 hours without them being able to get their heads down to floor level (natural when they are grazing) it can cause serious respiratory problems. They naturally excrete any 'gunk' while grazing with head lowered, but can't with it raised.

Secondly, because there is very restricted access to horses during travel with a tack locker in front of them. If the horse at the back panics, or has a problem, you can't get there easily to help them.

Hadn't actually thought about the OP's disaster, but am now adding it to the list of why I don't like tack lockers under the heads!!!

So sorry to hear about it. Hope the horse is OK
