...another rug post but...

What do others think about this brand rug?
They are cheap to buy,yet never mentioned.

I personally i wouldn't buy one because they always look too short in pictures in catalogs, they look like a mini skirts lol.
(Hope no one works for saxon reading this)lol!

I am willing to be corrected but I believe Saxon are the economy version of Weatherbeta. If they are and are cut similarly I find them a nice length in the barrel and also in the body length.

I have used both saxon and weatherbeata. as rugs get a bit of a rough time, I usually expect 2-3 seasons light wear or 1-2 seasons heavy use out of them, (and yes they usually need to be repaired), I find the saxon economical. I have had no problem with fit. They may be a bit shorter in length, but I do not find this an issue.

Rubbish! I bought one for my 17.1hh wb and it was meant to be 6'9. It was far too small and fitted my friends 16hh tb better, although even then his tummy was hanging out!!!

I bought one for my filly as she was in 6 foot rugs but a normal rug was to her knees or below! LOL these are much shorter so that was good for me, some tb's at our yard get away with them, I think if your horse has a decent barrell it would be a bit too short, also the rain sheets are good for showers but persistant rain always gets through - mine anyway, good for the price though, I may just give it a spray! :) xx

I agree they are on the short side, especially if you have a errr.. 'well-rounded' horse! I bought a 6' 3" for our tubby 16hh and it ended up being worn by our then two year old. And his belly still hung out lol.

I was told years ago they are designed for the native/cobby types with a shorter shoulder. I think they are also linked with weatherbeeta. A rug for someone on a budget which does the job. Have seen them on larger horses as a lightweight rain sheet where belly is a bit visible, but horse is dry and ready to ride.

Saxon rugs are weatherbeeta's budget range. Yes they do come up a bit short but I have never found that 2 be a problem with my well rounded cob. I have also never had 2 go up a size in these rugs. As for tearing more easily, I have 2 lightweight turnouts and 2 medium combo's that I've had for 4 years and they are still going strong!

The way they fit is great for yougsters and my ish is ok with them. My cobs belly hangs below by about 8 inches but as its a lightweight for summer use I think it helps to stop her overheating! I also use the middleweights as underrugs as they sit neatly underneath. But they do tend to be neat in size.

I have always been quite pleased with saxon rugs - although they seem to fit my TB better than the cobbier pony as a bit narrower, (and yes slightly shorter) I think. I have a lightweight non fill which is actually pretty waterproof too- better than other brands I have had.

I always think that they look like mini skirts for horses, they are ok as a spare or for light use when your horse lives out 24/7. My friend always uses them on her horses has she find the fit just right for them, however on my cob they come up really short.

We used to use these for riding school horses and know people weho have had them years. Bit mini skirt like but good economy rug!

I've found them to be short in depth rather than length so they are ideal for youngsters that are "leggy" and haven't filled out yet.... on adult horses they do end up looking a bit like a mini-dress.... my (adult) deep-chested TB's belly used to hang lower than the bottom of the rug!

Oh,i didnt know they were part of weatherbeater.maybe they are meant for the tb built horse then,as they do come shorter.
I bought a second. Hand saxon fleece of ebay last yr in 5ft it fitted my then 7 mth old well, but now shes so chuncky i wouldnt get away with one again.

i have one on my cob as he destroys every rug going so i refuse to buy him an expensive one. my only issue is bought it off equestrian clearance website, in the photo it was dark red & the colour was described as "sangria". on arrival it was bright pink. i do laugh at my (male) horse. does nothing for his street/ field cred.

I have a saxon fleece, it lasted really well last winter, just got the one minor rip in it. Fits him really nicely, (he's a 17.1 TB with a narrow shoulder and deep frame), he's wearing his overnight aswell, might by another if I needed too. Really happy with it! Didn't know they are part of weatherbeeta.

I have a stable and turnout Saxon and yes they are short. But great across the chest and body for my cob. Also have weatherbeta that fits like a glove ! Can't complain about either!

As with all rugs you get what you pay for.

I dont agree entirely!

I have had LW Amigos and Mark Todd ones (both costing a fortune) - both leaked after a heavy downpour.

My Saxon rigs on the other hand have NEVER leaked - i also have 3 rugs that are on their 3rd winter - never been re proofed (they are so cheap i dont see the point in re proofign and washing them) and they are still waterproof.

Ive had saxon full necks also - didnt rub, were warm etc.
As others have stated - they are not deep in the belly but apart from that i think they are great rugs!

I have my TB mare in a middleweight Saxon combo at the moment. It fits her well, has never leaked and is the one rug which doesn't cause her main to come out. But I understand what others are saying about the rug depth. I wouldn't want one on a bigger horse or a cob.

just put my big girls lw saxon on so i'll let you know in the morning if it's still in one piece;) she's 17hh and likes to hide under the blackthorn trees so i doubt any rug would survive the thorns so i'm happy to buy a cheaper rug seeing as they rarely last more than one season no matter what make they are!
