I'm devastated, I've made the decision to pts my dear old terrier tomorrow. He's 15 years old, I bred him and he's been with me from day one. I bought him back to the UK from Australia when he was 2 years old, poor little monkey didn't know what hit him and got a stinking cold within a week! He wore coats every winter and grew hairy, very hairy! He came racing with me all over the Uk, he liked Newbury best..

His back legs are giving up and he's looking at me, like the it's time he was going.. I only lost my Doberman in August, 10 years old, to a lung tumour and now for the first time since I got my first dog aged 19, 17 years..I will be without my best friends.. They have been my one constant, always there and with abudants of love. I feel so blessed to have had them grow up with my children, for they have been their best friends too.

So tomorrow night, please say a little toast to my dear old terrier Sammy and to my Ruby Roo, who we miss so much. And give all your dogs a extra big cuddle xx

Big hugs for you. Lucky, lucky dogs. Spent their whole lives safe and loved. Try to take some comfort from that. Easier said than done I know. X

So sorry to read this, but you are doing exactly the right thing. With a heart as big as yours you will find space for another little friend soon, but in the meantime cuddle your Sammy and spoil him rotten xx

gemma, if every dog in the world had an owner who put the dog's interests first, then we would be in a better place. It's difficult to say 'Well done you', but that's the reality. It's equally difficult to tell you that you should take pride in your decision, and to do what's right, but again, it's all a part of our responsibility.

Respect.

Alec.

What a shame for you. I had my horse PTS and 6 months later my cat followed her. Its never easy but how many dogs would have loved the life you gave yours and were not so lucky?

Thank you all for your kind words.

I spent the afternoon cuddled up with Sammy reading, like we always do. I whispered how much I loved him, he licked the tears from my cheeks, I recalled lots of happy memories of the last 15 years together. He went quickly and very peacefully in my arms at 3.30pm. He has been buried in my parents garden by the apple tree.

I feel completely distraught and so heartbroken, but I know Sammy passed with dignity and he knew he was so very dearly loved by the whole of my family.

Sleep well mate xx

Just wanted to say how sorry I am . . . and how brave and kind you are for doing this last final kindness for him. Hope you are feeling ok.
