Scab or sarcoid?

My new horse has what looks like a big scab over where his belly button would be. He's 2, 3 next month. Sarcoid alarm bells are ringing, and will get vet out but just wanted to see if anyone has seen something similar before? I did check him before buying, especially around sheath area as I wanted to avoid sarcoids!! Didn't notice this scab but then he didn't stand very still.
It's definitely on top of the skin, not under.

Is he pink there? My mare gets a scabby 'belly button' as the flies sit on it. Usually when I have forgotten to slather it in yellow goo to keep them off!
