my horse has a shortish but very thick winter coat he gets very very itchy and develops really thick scurf and dandruff esp where his saddle sits and his rugs lie on his back, I have recently noticed lots of little scabbed areas in these area as well, with sore bits underneath if you rub at them, nothing at all on his clipped and non friction areas. He wears clean numnahs and clean rugs. is not ringworm or fungal looking. really not sure what they are or what to do. am going to try a tea tree shampoo to get the scurf out but wonder if should clip him out although exercise level doesnt warrant it. I am very carefull to make sure he is not over rugged so not getting sweaty. Any advice ? never really had it before but does have very sensitive skin and prone to skin infection etc after fly bites

I'd have said rain scald but you say he's rugged so when would he have had chance to be getting sodden wet without reprieve? Unless he sweats alot? It could also be lice.....

You can still get rain scald if rugged. The infection may have been there since the summer months and has festered away underneath the rug if he was too warm one day and it set in. You must clip and treat using fuciderm or other treatment advised by vet. Once clipped you can see the extent of it.

thanks - I was thinking rain scald, he has had similar before - it feels like a bit like mud fever but in the wrong place - can you get it from sweating ? if is where he sweats up under saddle and did actually start a bit late summer when he wears a fly sheet all the time out and it gets wet

I'm pretty sure it can be caused by any prolonged exposure to wet, i.e sweat/rain, I agree that it will need clipping the scabs carefully removed usually I think with a hibiscrub solution and treatment for the fungal infection from a vet like fuciderm.
