My Big Horse seems to have scabby bits in his ears! Anyone had this before? Know how to treat it? Do you think giving him oil might help.. he is fine in himself with a lovely glossy coat but just very scabby ears???

Please help....

Are they just lots of tiny little scabs? My horse gets this in the summer, but on the outside of his ears. Not sure what causes it but I clean with Hibiscrub and pick the scabs off while doing so (nice!) then put some aloe vera on which seems to get rid of it.

Aural plaques caused by fly bites
Not easy to get rid of permanently
My horse allows me to rub gently and put cream on in the fly season but can be --touch me not at other times of the year.

cow warts???? - mine has them vet advised dont touch them (like i would if i could get in there!!) just leave them alone.
cant clean my horses ears unless i want a broken nose and black eye!!!!

I had a mare with plaque in her ears. It never bothered her and never spread so I didn't treat it. There are oils you can get to soften it - she'd always had it and like I say it never grew so I chose not to treat it (I could touch it and it wasn't sore). Might have been a different thing though as it wasn't scabs, just white 'crust'.

If you look at Headley Brittania, her ears are full of this and they actually have to dismantle her bridle to get over her ears since it's quite solid and is uncomfortable for her to try to pull the headbiece over her ears.

But it certainly hasn't affected her performance!!! ;o)

Def aural plaques as stated above. Make sure you dont bend their ears when tacking up as it can be very painful. Before I retired him, my big chap had them badly tho not as bad as Headley Britannia, and we had to split his bridle so he would allow it to be put on, its the squashing of the ears as the headpiece went over that was the problem. Split at the cheekpieces with the bottom/bit part on first then pop the rest over ears and do up was fine altho you need about 5 hands!

Head of equine at Royal Vet college said not to put anything on them, as the treatment applications arent very effective and the process can make them more ear shy than the original problem

He is fine with his ears being touched and having his bridle on! The scabs are half way up his ears - not low down - which i find really odd!! Just thought there might be somehtign i could do to help them!!

Thank you for all your comments so far....
