Not mud fever this time!

Belle cut her heels last sunday when she stood on a broken piece of concrete. I decided it wasn't deep o long enough to need stitching so hibiscrubbed it and put some prtoection plus on it. Because the fields are dry I turned her out again. Next day I did the same. Now it's started scabbing over and OH advised not to wash it anymore as would take the scab off, which sounds about right. Problem is, it looks muddy to me and I don't want to risk it getting infected. Fields are still dry though so hopefully it'll be ok to just leave it now and let it scab naturally, then the scab will fall off.

Is that right or should I still be washing it? The scab is a bit yellow, but I would espect that from any scab, it doesn't look infected and hasn't bled since it happened.

Thanks in advance

Should I wash it first or just put it on over the scab?

Think you have to do what you feel is most appropriate. However, I very, very rarely wash a scab - preferring instead to just keep it moist with the old SC.

Ah, didn't think about the sudocrem making it moist. Glad to hear heels heal well, I rode yesterday and she was fine, but I was really worried when she did it as it bled really badly and her heels were covered in blood! I'm quite proud of myself though as I didn't panic and I remembered learning that leg wounds bleed easily and often look worse than they are so I decided to stay calm and investigate and it did turn out to be virtually nothing. (I learned something from my HND at least

Think I'll soak it a little tonight but be really gentle not to disturb the scab, then lather in sudocrem. I need it to heal before the mud comes

Lucky we don't compete. I'd like to but she's 20 so although we can do some local comps, we don't do much, lol
