My gelding has developed a number of itchy scabs on the inside of his thigh, on one hind leg. It actually started a couple of months ago, with one or two scabs that I pulled off, but with his coat changing and him quite furry I assumed he had caught it on something in the field and I'd missed the cut until the scab was ready to come off. I did wonder if him trying to itch around the same general area was connected but again assumed it was coat changing and after removing the scabs and spraying with antibac spray haven't had a problem again, and forgot all about it until now.
I first noticed it again at the beginning of this week with another couple of scabs that came off easily, but nearly every day since I have found a new scab that wasn't there when previously checked and they seem to be spreading around the area and on the front of his hock joint. No other areas of pony are affected but he is also getting more itchy on his leg so pretty sure this is connected.
The scabs come off easily, with hair attached and skin is pink but healthy underneath. Some slightly bigger than others but mostly very small scabs. Quite randomly spaced, no pattern to the way its spreading. The skin isn't lumpy at all so doesn't look like insect/lice bites, he's had ringworm before but doesn't like that either. If anything I'd say it looks more like rainscald or mud fever but seems an odd place to get that? I am wondering if it is some sort of sweat rash perhaps?
He lives out as much as possible and isn't ridden much as he is semi retired so don't want to clip him out but I trimmed the area tonight with my clippers tonight in case he is too hot. He's always rugged as minimally as possible so never overly hot unless ridden, I always try to wash him off if sweaty but maybe i've not been thorough enough when doing this? I have continued to spray the area with antibacterial wound spray after removing scabs but not sure this helping and if there is something else I should be using?
Any ideas gratefully received! If it continues to spread or gets worse I will obviously contact vet but i'm hoping it is something I can manage myself.
