A horse I look after at work has scabs behind her knees. I have been told that this is common in cob type horses with feathery legs. We have clipped her legs so that the area is easier to treat, and we have cleaned the scabs with hibiscrub and we have been applying sudocreme to help to soften the scabs but it doesn't seem to be helping.

Does anyone have any experiences with dealing with horses prone to getting scabby legs? What is the best way to go about treating them?

Any advice much appreciated.

No ,having the same probelm with my TB, other than what you are alreay doing, if you think i may be field mites, try frontline flea spray, I am getting some tomorrow, so lets keep in touch.

This is the first year my boy has suffered from anything like this

It is very common in hairy coblets - they are called sallenders and mallenders when they are on the hind legs. They are tricky to shift but I have found feeding aloe vera juice does the trick for my cob - there is also a liquid skin product you can get from Equi-Life (the people who make Formula 4 Feet) that is supposed to do the trick.

Sounds like the cob has Mallenders. It cause horizontal ridges of greasy skin and can crack. Donlt wash too often but use plenty of ointment such as MSM with a sulpur content.
Then protect the legs and feather with a Pig Oil and FLowers of Sulphur mixture.

I undersrand common in Coblets, but mine is a tb AND THE FIRST YEAR HE HAS GOT IT, ANY IDEAS, sorry did not mean it to be in caputals
